The short answer
Poompuhar (Kaveripoompattinam): what visitors should know first
A good half-day trip if you like Tamil literary and maritime history. Check museum and gallery hours first, go in the morning and combine it with the shore temple there.
History and context
The story behind Poompuhar (Kaveripoompattinam)
Poompuhar was a major ancient port and for a time a Chola capital. Tamil works such as the Silappathikaram describe it. Much of the old city is understood to have been lost to the sea, with underwater archaeology supporting this.

Why it matters
Why Poompuhar (Kaveripoompattinam) is worth your time
Poompuhar was a major port of the early Cholas and appears in Sangam-era and later Tamil literature, including the Silappathikaram. Wikipedia notes that underwater archaeology supports the account of an older city lost to the sea.
For a visitor to Tharangambadi it adds the earlier layer: a Tamil maritime town that predates the Danes by well over a thousand years, whose story is told in the gallery and museum there, and which gives the coast its deeper background.

How to experience it
Poompuhar sits at the mouth of the Kaveri on the Bay of Bengal. Begin at the Silappathikaram Art Gallery, a building decorated with stone carvings of scenes from the Tamil epic, then see the marine archaeological museum if it is open.
Walk along the beach, where granite blocks line the shore against erosion, and see the shore temple, which is another Masilamaninathar temple built around 1305 and partly worn by the sea. Dried fish stalls near the shore are a local feature.
Keep the visit in the morning, as the coast heats up quickly. Combine it with Thirukkadaiyur on a longer day, but avoid cramming too much in one day, because roads are slow and the coastal sun is strong.
