How to experience it
Alwarthirunagari lies on the Tiruchendur-Tirunelveli road, about 29 km from Tiruchendur, on the north bank of the Thamirabarani. The Adinathar temple is the main attraction, a Dravidian-style temple behind a granite wall with a rajagopuram of about 29 m.
Inside, look for the Ramayana paintings and the pillars with detailed carving. A tamarind tree in the compound is believed to be where the child Nammalvar sat in meditation for sixteen years; devotees take pieces of it for medicinal use.
Daily worship follows a fixed pattern through the day. Check times locally. If you are visiting in May or June, you may catch the Garuda Seva festival, when nine Nava Tirupati deities are brought together. Dress traditionally and carry water.
