Day 1: Temple, river and halwa
Start at Nellaiappar Temple soon after it opens, before the stone floors heat up, and ask a guide to show the musical pillars. Walk to the riverside and cross the Sulochana Mudaliar Bridge to Palayamkottai. Visit the Government Museum if it is open that day, and see St Xavier's College and a church or two from the car. Rest through the afternoon, then drive to Krishnapuram for the Nayak sculpture if you still have energy. Finish in the evening with the queue at Iruttukadai for halwa.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Nellaiappar Temple 1.5 to 2 hours Moderate Early morning or late afternoon; the Aani festival in June-July draws very large crowds Palayamkottai Half a day Easy Morning or late afternoon Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

Day 2: Papanasam and the Ghats
Leave early for Agasthiyar Falls at Papanasam, about 42 km away. Visit the temples nearby and check at the gate whether bathing is open. Keep to the forest staff's advice and avoid late return drives. If you have energy, add a look at the Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve edge, but plan this properly in advance because entry is regulated.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve Full day, or overnight Moderate Cooler months; check forest department for seasonal closures Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve: Most of the visit is by vehicle, which suits older visitors, but forest roads are rough and facilities are basic. Heat, insects and remoteness are the main concerns.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Tirunelveli trip for parents and children
- Visit Nellaiappar in the early morning or late afternoon. Stone floors become very hot by late morning, and you must leave footwear at the entrance.
- Plan one big sight a day and rest in the afternoon. The heat is strong from March to September.
- Use a car and driver for the Ghats and coast. Waterfalls involve steps and wet ground; the temple and viewpoint are easier than the bathing areas.
- Choose a hotel with a lift and easy car access. Palayamkottai is generally calmer than the old town.
- Check forest and falls access before you travel. Flood warnings can close Agasthiyar Falls, and the tiger reserve needs arrangement in advance.
- For Tiruchendur, go on a weekday morning and avoid the Skanda Sashti period, when crowds are very large.
