Plan 01

1 day in Tirupati

  1. 01

Day 1: Tirumala temple early, evening in the city

Leave your hotel by 5 a.m. and head to the Tirumala temple entrance at Alipiri or the bus base to take the shared bus or hire a jeep. The temple opens before 6 a.m., and the shortest queues are in the early morning. Expect a queue of 2–4 hours even at this hour; bring water, a hat, and a light bag only. After the temple darshan, descend and have a rest at your hotel. In the late afternoon, visit Sri Govindaraja Temple in the old city—it is quieter, air-conditioned inside the sanctum, and offers a different style of temple experience. Walk to nearby Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple if energy permits. End the day with an early dinner and a walk along the ghats near the Tirupati-Renigunta Road.

Plan 02

2 days in Tirupati

  1. 01

Day 1: Tirumala temple and evening exploration

Start at 5 a.m. for Tirumala (as above). After descent and rest, visit Sri Govindaraja Temple in the evening. Have dinner in the old city or near the temple bazaar.

  2. 02

Day 2: Nearby temples and sacred pools

Rest the morning or visit Padmavati Temple at Alamelu Mangapuram, on the road leading to Tirumala (about 6 km from the city; requires a car). Return for lunch. In the late afternoon, visit Papavinasam Theertham, a sacred waterfall pool set in a rocky gorge about 7 km from the city. It is a peaceful spot, less crowded than the main temple, with small wayside food stalls. Alternatively, visit the ghats of Tirupati for a quieter spiritual experience, or explore local markets like Sri Vari Bazaar for souvenirs.

Plan 03

3 days in Tirupati

  1. 01

Day 1: Tirumala temple and acclimatisation

As above: early temple visit, rest, and evening in the city.

  2. 02

Day 2: Alamelu Mangapuram and Papavinasam

Drive to Padmavati Temple at Alamelu Mangapuram (about 6 km; 30–40 minutes with stops). It is a serene, less-crowded temple with a beautiful gopuram and interesting history—Padmavati (Alamelu Mangamma) is the consort of Venkateswara, and this temple honours her independently. Return for lunch. Visit Papavinasam Theertham in the afternoon. The pool is believed to be sacred, and the walk down to it takes about 15 minutes over rocks; do not go if mobility is a concern. Carry water and wear proper shoes.

  3. 03

Day 3: Nearby sacred sites and crafts

Visit Akasa Ganga, a natural waterfall about 8 km away, where pilgrims often bathe before ascending to Tirumala (or descend here on the way down). It is a short, scenic drive from the city, with a walk down a shaded path. In the afternoon, explore Sri Kalahasti, an ancient temple town about 35–40 km away, famous for its serpent stone and ornate gopuram. If that is too much, stay in Tirupati and visit the older parts of the city—Agraharams, temple bazaars, and local workshops where artisans still craft bronze temple idols and wooden items. End with a quiet evening at one of the temple ghats or a café overlooking the town.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • Tire early for Tirumala: the queue is shorter before 7 a.m. even if it is still long. Plan to rest for at least 2 hours after returning from the temple.
  • The marble floors of temples are very hot underfoot, especially in the afternoon. Wear socks and sunscreen, carry water. Never visit temples during peak heat (11 a.m.–3 p.m.) unless absolutely necessary.
  • Stairs at the temple can be steep; the main approach has many steps. Use the vehicle parking area and enter from the car drop area if this is an issue. Ask for assistance from the temple volunteers (they are trained for this).
  • Hire a car and driver for the 2–3 days, or rely on your hotel's pre-arranged transport. Walking between sights is not recommended in the heat; autos and tempos are crowded.
  • Choose a hotel with a lift and good air-conditioning. The old city areas are compact and can be visited on foot in the evening when it is cooler, but stay near your hotel during the day.
  • Hospitals in Tirupati are good and used to elderly pilgrims. A few large ones are near GT Road. Note the location of your nearest hospital or medical clinic before arrival.
