Why it matters
Why Nagalapuram Falls Trek is worth your time
The Nagalapuram hills are part of the Eastern Ghats, close enough to Chennai and Tirupati for a day trip, and the stream trek is one of the best-known forest walks in the region. Clear pools, rock slabs and shaded forest make it unlike the temple sights nearby.
Its popularity has brought problems: litter along the trail and accidents at the deep pools. Visiting quietly, in a small group, and following local forest rules helps keep it open.

How to experience it
The walk starts from Arai village near Nagalapuram. A car park lies about 2 km further on beside a lake, and from there the path runs about 2 km through forest to the stream, which it then follows upstream over rocks and boulders.
The route passes a series of waterfalls, each with a pool. The first pool is the busiest; the farther pools take most of a day there and back over rough ground. The third and last pool is deep and has caused several drownings, so do not swim without life jackets and a guide who knows the water.
Carry all the water and food you need, wear shoes that grip on wet rock, and keep electronics in a waterproof bag. Go with an experienced group or local guide, and turn back if the stream is high after rain. The trail is popular at weekends and has suffered from litter, so take everything back out.

- Check current forest department rules before you go
- Start early and plan to be out before dark
