Why it matters
Why Uppuveli Beach is worth your time
Uppuveli is the part of Trincomalee that has grown around visitors. The Konesar hill rises behind the beach, so the sea and the old temple headland share one view, which makes the beach feel anchored in the place rather than separate from it. It was a popular beach resort before the tsunami and the war, and visitor numbers have recovered since 2010.
For travellers from India it makes a practical base: it is close enough to the town and the Hindu temples, has Tamil-speaking staff in many places, and sits only a short drive from Nilaveli. It is simpler and cheaper than the bigger resort stretches elsewhere in Sri Lanka.

How to experience it
Spend the morning on the beach, when the sea is calmest, and leave the middle of the day for rest. Uppuveli is long and thin, with guesthouses and restaurants along Sarvodaya Road, a short walk from the sand. Wikivoyage notes that the stretch near the beach bars is usually the cleanest.
In the late afternoon walk to the small Salli Muthumariamman Kovil on the coast, where festivals bring drumming and processions. Take a tuk-tuk to the nearby war cemetery on Nilaveli Road or into town for Koneswaram, and return for dinner on Sarvodaya Road. Some guesthouses rent bicycles, but traffic and heat make them better for fit travellers.
Menus mix Sri Lankan, Western and seafood dishes. Vegetarian diners should ask whether curries use fish stock or dried fish before ordering, and ask kitchens to prepare dishes without them.
Plan with confidence
