The short answer
Best areas to stay in Tso Moriri
- 01
Korzok village, near the lake shore
Best for: Travellers seeking immersion in plateau life and proximity to the lake and monastery
A handful of family-run guesthouses, very basic—expect simple rooms, shared or private toilets, and hand-heated water if any. Electricity is limited and unreliable. The isolation and simplicity suit contemplative travellers; not recommended for those with mobility issues or high comfort expectations. Local families are often welcoming but speak limited English. Pre-book and confirm details with your tour operator or driver well in advance.
- 02
Mahe village or the road back towards Leh
Best for: Those wanting slightly more facilities and a less extreme altitude overnight before the final push to Tso Moriri
A small hamlet with 1–2 guesthouses. Warmer and with more oxygen than Tso Moriri itself, but still very remote. Some travellers break the journey here to acclimatise further. Check road conditions with your driver; snow and landslides can close the route.
- 03
Chumathang, on the Indus valley route
Best for: Travellers who want a lower-altitude overnight to ease into or out of the Changthang plateau
A small hot spring resort and a few basic guesthouses sit at about 3,950 metres, noticeably lower and warmer than Korzok or Mahe. Rooms are simple but the village has 24-hour electricity and mobile coverage, plus dhabas for food. A sensible stop for older travellers breaking a long drive, or recovering from a day at higher altitude before pushing on.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Tso Moriri
- Do not skip acclimatisation. Spend at least one full day at Leh (3,500 metres) before heading to Tso Moriri (4,522 metres). Ideally, spend time at an intermediate altitude like Khardung La (5,359 metres) pass on your way, which allows gradual adjustment.
- Consult your doctor before travelling. Inform them of your medical history, medications and any heart, lung or blood pressure concerns. High altitude can trigger or worsen these conditions.
- Altitude sickness symptoms include headache, nausea, shortness of breath and poor sleep. If symptoms are severe, descend immediately. Acetazolamide (Diamox) is sometimes prescribed; discuss this with your doctor in advance.
- Protect yourself from the sun and dryness. Apply sunscreen (SPF 50+) every hour, wear a hat and UV-blocking sunglasses, and drink 3–4 litres of water daily despite the cold. The air is extremely dry and the sun intense.
