The short answer

Trivikrama Temple, Ter: what visitors should know first

Worth a stop for anyone interested in early architecture. It is small and quick, and the surrounding village has few facilities, so treat it as a one-hour detour with a car and check the road time from Tuljapur with your driver.

History and context

The story behind Trivikrama Temple, Ter

Wikipedia says the temple is thought to have been built under the Satavahanas in the 2nd or 3rd century CE. The flat-roofed external mandapa is probably a 6th-century addition, when the building was converted to Hindu use, and the Trivikrama image probably dates to the early Chalukyas.

Henry Cousens and most later writers believed it was originally Buddhist, while M. S. Mate disputed this in 1957.

Why it matters

Why Trivikrama Temple, Ter is worth your time

The temple is often described as the oldest standing structure in Maharashtra. Its apsidal plan, resembling early Buddhist halls, and its likely Satavahana-period origins make it important for understanding how early Indian religious architecture evolved from Buddhist to Hindu use.

Scholars have debated whether it began as a Buddhist building, with Henry Cousens arguing that it did and M. S. Mate disputing the view in 1957. For a visitor, the debate is part of the interest: a small brick building that still raises large questions about early Deccan history.

How to experience it

The Trivikrama Temple at Ter is dedicated to Vamana, an incarnation of Vishnu. Scholars have long noted its apsidal plan, which resembles early Buddhist chaitya halls, and the chaitya-arch on the front, similar to those in rock-cut Buddhist architecture.

Walk round the exterior first. Look for the wagon-vaulted ridge roof and the flat-roofed mandapa in front, a later addition, probably of the 6th century, when the building was converted to Hindu use. Then step inside to see the stone image of Trivikrama, which probably dates to the early Chalukya period.

The visit is short, but the building rewards slow looking, especially if you have seen the Dharashiv Caves, since the two sites together show the region's early Buddhist and Hindu architecture side by side. Hire a car for the trip and confirm the route; I could not verify the distance from Tuljapur.
