Before you go

Tumakuru with elderly parents: what to know

  • Skip the Madhugiri climb unless you are fit; the lower steps are fine but the upper rock is steep.
  • Devarayanadurga and the village temples suit older travellers best, and the road reaches almost to the top.
  • Visit in the early morning, then rest at your hotel in the afternoon.
  • Carry water and snacks; fort and sanctuary areas have almost no shops.
  • Keep food away from monkeys at Devarayanadurga.
  • Siddaganga Matha and Kote Anjaneya are largely level and close to town.

Easiest first

Places in Tumakuru sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (4)

  • Chennakeshava Temple, Aralaguppe (Culture and craft · 45 to 60 minutes) — Level ground around the temple, but the site has limited seating and shade. The village road can be rough. Easy for most visitors if they can reach it by car.
  • Chennakeshava Temple, Kaidala (Culture and craft · 45 minutes) — Level, small site with little seating or shade. The village roads are narrow. Easy for most, but with no facilities.
  • Kote Anjaneya Swamy Temple (Places of worship · 30 to 45 minutes) — Level and in the middle of town. Expect queues and noise on Saturdays and festival days. Footwear comes off, so wear easy shoes.
  • Siddaganga Matha (Places of worship · 1 to 2 hours) — The campus is largely level with paved paths, though distances between buildings can be long in the heat. Expect crowds and queues on festival days. Wear easy footwear since shoes come off at the shrine.

Some walking — plan a break (3)

  • Bukkapatna Chinkara Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · A full day, including the drive) — No developed facilities or seating are published, and visits are on foot or by vehicle on forest tracks in open scrub with little shade. Only suitable for seniors who are comfortable on rough ground and want a long day.
  • Devarayanadurga (Places to visit · Half a day) — The base temple is manageable, and a winding road reaches near the summit, so you can see most of it without trekking. The final stretch to Yoga Narasimha involves steps, and the site has few seats and shade. Better by car than on foot.
  • Thimlapura Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half a day at most, if permitted) — No visitor facilities or seating are published, and the terrain is rough forest and rock. Not a good choice for older travellers, and sloth bears make independent walking unwise.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)

  • Channarayanadurga (Places to visit · Half a day) — Uneven rock and long stretches of open slab with no seating, rails or shade make this tough for older visitors or anyone with knee problems. The surrounding countryside can be enjoyed from the road without the climb.

Practical tips for Tumakuru

  • Heat. March to May is hot, with highs around 34-35 C. Start treks at dawn and finish before late morning.
  • Monsoon. September and October are the wettest months and the rock paths at Madhugiri and Channarayanadurga become slippery. Avoid them in the rains.
  • Getting around. A hired car with driver is the practical way to reach the forts and villages. Buses and trains serve Tumakuru itself.
  • Walking. The forts involve long stretches of bare rock with few rails. Wear shoes with a firm grip and carry water.
  • Money. Cash is useful in villages and at temples. Card and UPI work in the town but are unreliable at hill stops.
  • Dress. Dress modestly at the temples and the matha, and be ready to remove footwear.
  • Registration. At Madhugiri, climbers register with the guards and carry photo ID, according to Karnataka Tourism. Rules may change, so confirm on arrival.
  • Monkeys. Macaques at Devarayanadurga are bold. Keep food out of sight and do not feed them.
