The short answer

Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium: what visitors should know first

Go only if a match is scheduled; the stadium sees little international cricket and is not open as a regular attraction. For cricket-loving Indian visitors it is a curiosity en route between Udawalawe and the south coast.

History and context

The story behind Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium

The stadium was established in 2009 and is owned and run by Sri Lanka Cricket. It staged its first men's ODI, Sri Lanka against Canada, on 20 February 2011 during the World Cup, and its first men's T20I in June 2012.

It hosted all 23 matches of the 2020 Lanka Premier League and has also been hired out for wedding receptions. Wikipedia notes that a 2016 inspection found its facilities in poor condition.

Why it matters

Why Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium is worth your time

The stadium is a reminder of how Hambantota District has been developed, and it has a place in Sri Lankan cricket as the venue of the 2011 World Cup match between Sri Lanka and Canada. With a capacity of 35,000 it is the second-largest stadium in the country, according to Wikipedia.

It has also been called a white elephant because of its construction and upkeep costs and the small number of international matches. That candour matters for travellers: it is a real ground with real history, but not a dependable attraction. Treat it as a fixture-led stop for cricket fans and nothing more.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Check Sri Lanka Cricket's fixture list before planning; Wikipedia records the ground's last men's ODI in August 2023 and a women's series in June 2024, so matches are infrequent. If a game is on, hire a car and driver, leave early and agree return transport in advance.

The ground is a long drive from most hotels, with limited services nearby, so carry water, sun protection and cash. Expect strong heat and little shade in uncovered stands. Follow stadium rules on bags and food, and book tickets only through official channels.

If no match is on, the stadium is only worth a glance from the road. Most travellers should spend the time on the safari and the Elephant Transit Home instead.

Plan with confidence

Event-led places reward a little planning.

  • Check the Sri Lanka Cricket fixture list first
  • Buy tickets only through official channels
  • Hire a driver for the day and agree the return
  • Carry water and sun protection
