Plan 01

1 day in Udupi

  1. 01

Day 1: Temple morning, coast afternoon

Arrive early and head straight to Sri Krishna Matha, aiming to be at the temple gate around 5–6 a.m. during weekdays when queues are shorter. Spend two to three hours, including the Kankana kindi entrance. If you have mobility questions, the staff can direct you to easier routes inside the temple complex. Return to the town for a late breakfast of idli and dosa at a local mess or café—these are the heart of Udupi cuisine. After lunch and a rest if traveling with parents, drive to Malpe Beach (about 6 km west) for the afternoon, or take an auto. If the light permits, the boat ride out to St. Mary's Islands takes about 30 minutes from Malpe; otherwise, a simple walk along the beach and a light dinner of fresh seafood in a shack near the shore will give you a flavour of the coast.

Plan 02

2 days in Udupi

  1. 01

Day 1: The temple and the town

Wake early and visit Sri Krishna Matha, allowing two to three hours inside. The Kankana kindi gate is the traditional entrance; if stairs or crowds are a concern, ask temple staff about alternative routes. Spend late morning exploring the Krishna Matha complex itself and the street of small shops and cafés directly outside. Have a proper Udupi lunch at one of the traditional eating establishments, which typically serve a thali of rice, sambar, rasam, vegetables, and dahl. Spend the afternoon resting if with parents, or visit one of the nearby subsidiary temples: Chandramouleshwara Temple (also called Moodabidri, though the larger one is in Moodabidri proper) or Anantheshwara Temple. As evening comes, take a walk through the main bazaar streets to see the town's pulse before dinner.

  2. 02

Day 2: Beaches and islands or a second temple

Either spend the morning at Malpe Beach with an optional boat ride to St. Mary's Islands (a protected marine sanctuary with rocky shores and colonial history), or stay closer to the temples by visiting the Ashta Mathas (the eight monasteries founded by Madhvacharya's followers). The latter walk is meditative but involves some street navigation. By early afternoon, head back towards Malpe if you chose the temples, or spend the later afternoon shopping for Udupi textiles and handicrafts in the town centre. Depart in the evening or stay another night if there is a festival or if you wish to experience the temple atmosphere again.

Plan 03

3 days in Udupi

  1. 01

Day 1: The temple, morning to afternoon

Arrive early and spend the full morning at Sri Krishna Matha. The temple's rituals and the free meals served in the matha's kitchens are central to Udupi's identity. Take your time, ask staff about the history of the Dvaita philosophy if interested, and if you arrive during meal times, you may be invited to join the free temple lunch. Spend the evening strolling the temple lanes and smaller shrines, and eat at a proper Udupi restaurant.

  2. 02

Day 2: Malpe, St. Mary's Islands and the coast

Drive to Malpe Beach early, roughly 6 km west. The boat ride out to St. Mary's Islands (four small, uninhabited islands) is a high point if the sea is calm; the ride takes 30–45 minutes each way and costs roughly ₹100–₹200 per person (negotiate in advance). The islands have rocky shores, lighthouse ruins, and are a protected marine sanctuary, so time ashore is limited to the beach. Return to Malpe and lunch on fresh fish or crab at one of the beach shacks. Spend the afternoon walking the beach or visiting the Malpe Port area, which has fishing boats and nets. Return to town by evening.

  3. 03

Day 3: Secondary temples and a wider view

Visit the Ashta Mathas (the eight subsidiary temples of the Krishna Matha, scattered through the town), which are pilgrimage sites in their own right and less crowded than the main temple. Or take a drive to nearby Moodabidri (roughly 20 km inland, about 30–45 minutes by road), which has a large Chandramouleshwara Temple and the famous Jain temples known for their intricate interiors. If staying coastal, visit Kaup Beach or Delta Beach, which are quieter than Malpe and have a slower fishing-village atmosphere. Return to Udupi in time for a final temple visit at dusk, when evening aartis (rituals) offer a spiritual climax, and shop for local crafts—textiles, sandalwood carvings, and temple-inspired artwork—before departing.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • Heat builds fast after mid-morning: Udupi is hot and humid most of the year outside the winter months. Plan temple visits and beach walks for early morning or late afternoon, and treat midday as a rest period, especially for older travellers or young children.
  • A car and driver beats juggling autos: Sights are spread between the town, Malpe, Kaup and Manipal, each a short but separate drive. A car and driver for the day is more comfortable than several auto-rickshaw rides, particularly if you are travelling with parents or a stroller.
  • Temple floors get hot underfoot: Stone and marble temple floors can be uncomfortably hot by early afternoon, since shoes come off before the sanctum. Visit temples earlier in the day, or ask staff about socks or a shaded route if the floor is too hot.
  • Dress modestly at temples: There is no strict enforced dress code at most Udupi temples, but shorts and sleeveless tops are best avoided out of respect. Carrying a light scarf or shawl is useful if you want extra coverage without extra layers in the heat.
  • Boats to St Mary's Islands depend on the sea: Ferries to the islands generally run October to May and pause for the June-September monsoon, and can be cancelled on a rough day even outside that window. Build in flexibility rather than fixing the boat trip to a single non-negotiable day.
  • Festival dates change the town's rhythm: Krishna Janmashtami and the Rathotsava chariot festival bring large crowds and full accommodation. Check current dates before booking if you want to see a festival, or avoid those dates if you prefer a quieter visit.
