The short answer
Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park (GWK): what visitors should know first
Worth a half-day if you want a big-scale landmark and cultural shows in one place. Go in the later afternoon, book tickets online, and decide in advance whether you want the park only or the statue tour as well.
History and context
The story behind Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park (GWK)
The park opened in 1989 according to its Wikipedia infobox, but the statue took decades to finish. Construction was completed on 31 July 2018 and President Joko Widodo inaugurated it on 22 September 2018. The statue is made of copper and brass sheeting over a steel frame, and weighs about 4,000 tonnes.
Some religious authorities on the island objected to its size and commercial nature, while others welcomed it as a use for barren land. The park has hosted concerts, banquets and, in 2022, the G20 welcome dinner.

Why it matters
Why Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park (GWK) is worth your time
For Indian visitors the Vishnu-and-Garuda theme is a clear link to a familiar story: the sculpture draws on the myth of the elixir of life. It is also a major piece of modern Indonesian monumental art, by the sculptor Nyoman Nuarta, and it divides opinion on the island for its size and commercial setting.
It is not an ancient site. It is a modern cultural park built around a monument, so go for the scale, the shows and the views, not for old temples. The Uluwatu cliff temple gives the older, quieter counterpart.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Start with the statue: the Vishnu-on-Garuda figure is about 75 metres tall, and with its base the monument reaches roughly 121 metres, so it can be seen from far away. The park around it has plazas, a street theatre, an amphitheatre and the Lotus Pond, a large limestone-pillared event space.
The official site lists daily cultural performances and participatory ritual experiences, as well as dining, from fine dining to a buffet and a local-food spot. Decide what you want before you go: a quick statue visit, a full cultural afternoon with a show, or a statue tour that previews the interior.
Because the site is open and has little shade, go later in the afternoon when it is cooler, wear a hat and carry water. Add a buggy if walking is a concern, and plan the exit time with your driver.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
