Plan 01

1 day in Unakoti

  1. 01

Day 1: Carvings and a lakeside stop

Start from Kailashahar or leave Agartala before dawn, as the road is long. Reach Unakoti soon after opening and see the Shiva head, then the Ganesha figures, spending about two hours on the paved paths. Return to Kailashahar for lunch and, if time allows, a short stop at Khowrabil Lake. Aim to be off the hill road before dusk.

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Plan 02

2 days in Unakoti

  1. 01

Day 1: Arrive and settle in Kailashahar

Travel from Agartala or the railhead at Dharmanagar or Kumarghat, with a stop at Bhabatarini Mandir in Kumarghat if you pass through. Check into a Kailashahar hotel, rest, and stroll to Khowrabil Lake in the late afternoon.

  2. 02

Day 2: The ravine at first light

Reach Unakoti when it opens and walk the ravine slowly, taking in the Shiva head, the Ganesha figures, Durga on her lion and the half-buried Nandi. Rest, then return to Kailashahar for lunch before your onward journey.

Plan 03

3 days in Unakoti

  1. 01

    Day 1: Journey north

Make the long drive from Agartala to Kailashahar, using Kumarghat's Bhabatarini Mandir as a break. Settle in and keep the evening easy.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Unakoti carvings

Spend the morning at Unakoti, then rest through the hot hours. In the late afternoon, visit Khowrabil Lake and walk through Kailashahar town.

  3. 03

Day 3: A slower second look or the road back

If you want another view, return to the ravine at opening for quieter light, or simply begin the journey back. Check road conditions before setting out, especially in the wet months.

Pacing

Pacing a Unakoti trip for parents and children

  • See the Shiva head and Ganesha figures first, then decide whether to continue; you do not have to complete the whole ravine.
  • Wear shoes with grip, as steps and slopes can be slippery, especially after rain.
  • Travel in the dry months and avoid the April fair if crowds are a concern.
  • Overnight in Kailashahar rather than doing the whole round trip from Agartala in a day.
  • Leave the site well before dusk; I could not verify any lighting.
  • Carry water and snacks, since supplies near the site are limited.
