Plan 01
1 day in Uttarkashi
- 01
Day 1: Two temples and a hill shrine
Start at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in the morning, then cross to the Shakti temple and look at the trident. Take a taxi up to Kuteti Devi on Hari Parvat for the view over the Bhagirathi. After lunch and a rest, drive to Maneri Dam for a short stop on the Gangotri road, or look at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering from the town side if you have not arranged a visit.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) 1–2 hours if access is permitted Moderate Daytime on a working weekday; October to November and March to June for clear views Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM): The campus is on a hill reached by road, so a car or taxi does most of the work. Inside, distances between blocks are moderate and the terrain slopes, so ask about seating and a vehicle drop at the museum.

Day 1: Temples and town
Visit the Vishwanath and Shakti temples early, then go up to Kuteti Devi by taxi and walk down if the weather suits. Rest after lunch. In the afternoon, write ahead to see the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering's museum and campus, if admitted, and finish with a walk by the river at dusk.

Day 2: Forest lake or valley road
Drive to Chaurangi Khal and walk about 3 km to Nachiketa Tal if you are comfortable on a forest path, returning before dark. Otherwise, take a car along the valley road to Maneri Dam and rest. If you are heading on to Gangotri, leave early and expect a long day.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Nachiketa Tal Half a day to a full day, including the drive Moderate Spring to early summer and September to November; snow can block the route in winter Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Nachiketa Tal: The road reaches Chaurangi Khal, but the last 3 km to the lake is a forest path with some climbing. Seniors who walk steadily can manage it slowly, but it is not step-free and has little seating.

Day 1: The town's temples
Spend the morning at the Vishwanath and Shakti temples, then go to Kuteti Devi. Keep the afternoon slow, with a visit to the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering if access is arranged.

Day 3: A meadow or lake, for fit travellers
Take a guided day or overnight to Dayara Bugyal via Raithal or Barsu, or start the Dodital trek from Sangamchatti with a registered operator. Travellers who prefer an easier day can repeat a temple visit at the evening aarti and plan the onward journey to Gangotri or back to Rishikesh.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Dayara Bugyal 2–4 days round trip depending on route Demanding April to June and September to October; snow in winter Pace: Dayara Bugyal involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Dayara Bugyal: Reaching the meadow needs a climb on a mountain trail over a day or more, at altitude. It is not recommended for travellers with limited mobility; the base villages are easier visits.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Uttarkashi trip for parents and children
- Break the journey from Rishikesh or Dehradun with a rest stop; the road to Uttarkashi takes most of a day.
- Do the Vishwanath and Shakti temples early, when they are cool and quiet, and keep afternoons for rest.
- Use a taxi for Kuteti Devi and the Nehru Institute, as both are on hills.
- Skip the Dodital and Dayara Bugyal treks unless you are fit and experienced; Nachiketa Tal is gentler but still involves a forest path.
- Carry any regular medicines in hand luggage, and know where the nearest hospital is before you travel up the valley.
- Avoid July and August, when landslides can close the road with little warning.
