The short answer
Rampurwa Ashoka Pillars: what visitors should know first
Worth a stop if you like early history. Expect the pillar shafts, not the famed capitals, and a quiet rural site. Allow 30 to 45 minutes, and combine it with Bhitiharwa and the Manguraha side.
History and context
The story behind Rampurwa Ashoka Pillars
Wikipedia says A. C. L. Carlleyle found the pair of pillars around 1876. The bull capital is dated to the 3rd century BCE, the lion pillar carries Major Pillar Edicts I to VI, and the lion capital is now in the Indian Museum, Kolkata. The bull capital is at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
Waddell suggested in 1896 that the Buddha's death occurred near Rampurva, but modern scholarship places it at Kushinagar.

Why it matters
Why Rampurwa Ashoka Pillars is worth your time
Ashoka's pillars marked roads and holy places of the 3rd century BCE, and the pair at Rampurwa stand close to the Nepal border. The lion pillar is inscribed with the major pillar edicts, while the bull capital, with its realistic zebu and Greek-influenced palmette abacus, shows Mauryan sculpture at a high level of finish.
Seeing the site is a way to place Champaran on the early historical map. It lies on an ancient route toward Nepal and the Buddhist places farther south-west, and the pillars hint at how widely Ashoka's message was spread. Though the capitals have long been removed, the shafts still stand where Ashoka's masons set them.
