Vang Vieng sits on the Nam Song River in Vientiane Province, roughly between Vientiane and Luang Prabang, with sheer limestone cliffs rising straight out of farmland. Wikipedia dates the first settlement to about 1353 as a staging post on the route between those two cities, and the name Vang Vieng dates from the French colonial period.
Most people know it for tubing, which grew informally from about 1999 and later filled the river with bars until the government pulled them down in 2012. What remains is a calmer riverside town with caves, lagoons, viewpoints and kayaking, and a population of roughly 25,000.
For Indian families, the appeal is scenery and a soft pace rather than temples or monuments. The Laos-China railway, which opened in December 2021, put Vang Vieng about an hour from Vientiane by express train, which makes it practical even for older parents who would not enjoy a long mountain road.
Be realistic about food. Vegetarian dining is possible but not well documented in sources we could open, and we have not tagged any restaurant as pure vegetarian, Jain or vegan. Travel insurance matters because local medical care is basic and serious cases go to Vientiane or Thailand.
