Why Ramnagar Fort is worth your time
Ramnagar Fort was built in the mid-18th century, under Raja Balwant Singh, from cream-coloured Chunar sandstone. It became the seat of the Kashi Naresh, the Maharajas of Banaras, who hold a special ceremonial place in the city's religious life. Locals still greet the Maharaja with cries of 'Har Har Mahadev', honouring his traditional role as the representative of Shiva.
The Ramlila of Ramnagar, patronised by the royal family for generations, is one of the oldest and most elaborate staged Ramlilas in India. It forms part of the Ramlila tradition recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. The fort and town together give a sense of the courtly side of Banaras that the ghats rarely show.

How to experience it
Drive across to Ramnagar in the late morning. Depending on traffic, it usually takes around 45 minutes to an hour from the Godowlia side and less from Assi. The fort's walls rise straight from the Ganga, and many travellers also enjoy seeing it from a boat. Some longer boat rides from Assi go as far as the fort, depending on river conditions.
Inside, the Saraswati Bhawan museum displays vintage cars, silver and ivory palanquins, howdahs, antique weapons, costumes and an elaborate astronomical clock. The presentation is old-fashioned, with dusty cases and faded labels, but it has real charm and the objects are remarkable. Allow time for the riverside terrace, where the view back towards Varanasi's ghats is wide and calm.
If your dates fall during Ramnagar's Ramlila, usually a month-long performance around Dussehra staged across the town, ask locally about attending an evening episode. It is a unique tradition, but it involves crowds, open-air sites and late nights, so plan carefully with seniors.
