The short answer

Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary: what visitors should know first

Only for a long, planned day trip, ideally between October and January when waterbirds are present. Go early, carry water and hire a driver; it is far from Velankanni and offers little shade.

History and context

The story behind Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary

The sanctuary was established in 1967 mainly for blackbuck. Wikipedia reports a rise in blackbuck numbers from about 750 to 800 at the time to 1,908 in 1998 and 1999, and records the Ramsar designation on 19 August 2002.

The modern lighthouse was commissioned on 9 March 1998. Remains of an older brick structure, called the Chola Lighthouse, lie near the point and were damaged in the 2004 tsunami.

Why it matters

Why Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary is worth your time

Point Calimere is part of a Ramsar site (no. 1210, designated 2002) whose wider area covers about 385 sq km of wetland and forest. It is one of the main waterbird habitats on the Tamil Nadu coast and a rare place to see blackbuck in open grassland.

It rounds out a coastal itinerary that is otherwise about pilgrimage and heritage, showing the natural coastline that the older towns grew up beside.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Blackbuck

The flagship species of the sanctuary, seen in open grassland.

  2. 02

    Migratory waterbirds

Flocks including greater flamingos arrive from about October.

  3. 03

    Lighthouses

A 1998 lighthouse and old brick ruins near the point.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan this as a full excursion with a driver who knows the route. The sanctuary covers about 21 sq km along the Palk Strait, created in 1967 mainly to conserve blackbuck, which remain its flagship species. Early morning is best for both animals and birds, and the air is cooler.

Waterbirds arrive from about October for the feeding season and start returning towards breeding grounds from January, so this window gives the best chance of large flocks, including greater flamingos. A 45 m lighthouse near Kodaikorai Beach was commissioned in 1998, and the remains of an old brick Chola-era lighthouse lie near the point.

Wildlife viewing is never guaranteed, so treat the trip as a day on the coast rather than a safari. Carry water, sun protection and binoculars if you have them.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Hire a driver and start early
  • Confirm entry rules and fees locally
  • Carry water and sun protection
