The short answer

Soundararaja Perumal Temple: what visitors should know first

A solid stop in Nagapattinam town for temple lovers, easily paired with Nagore and Sikkal. Allow about an hour, dress traditionally and check timings for midday closure.

History and context

The story behind Soundararaja Perumal Temple

The temple is believed to date from the Medieval Cholas in the late 8th century CE, according to Wikipedia, with later additions by the Pallavas, Thanjavur Nayaks and Thanjavur Marathas. Jagul Nayakar is credited with the tower and halls in the 1650s, and Kundo Pandithar with several shrines in 1737.

Sources differ on whether the gateway tower is five-tiered or seven-tiered and on a story that a tower was once used as a lighthouse, so Raahzo does not rely on that detail.

Why it matters

Why Soundararaja Perumal Temple is worth your time

Nagapattinam was once a major port, and its temples carry traces of every layer of patronage. Wikipedia credits the Cholas with the original building in about the 8th century, later contributions from the Pallavas, Thanjavur Nayaks and Marathas, and the 1650s tower and halls to Jagul Nayakar.

As a Divya Desam, it is also one of the sites visited and sung about by the Alvar poet-saint Thirumangai, making it a destination for devotees of the Vaishnava tradition, and a rewarding stop for anyone interested in the Kaveri delta's temple culture.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start by looking up at the east-facing rajagopuram, described as about 90 ft, and then step into the four-pillared hall at the entrance, where two guardian sculptures, Sumba and Nigumba, stand about eight feet tall. Take time over the Nayaka-era hall designed as a chariot with wheels; it is the kind of detail most visitors miss.

Inside, the temple's Vishnu is worshipped as Soundararaja Perumal with his consort Soundaravalli. The rare eight-armed image of Narasimha is a point of interest for those who know temple iconography. The temple tank, Sarapushkarani, and the nearby Odambokki river form part of the setting.

The Chittirai chariot festival in March to April is the highlight, but it brings crowds. A weekday morning visit gives a quieter experience, and the temple combines well with the lighthouse area and Nagapattinam's other temples on a short loop.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Dress modestly; footwear off
  • Check darshan timings, especially midday
  • Visit on weekdays to avoid crowds
  • Combine with Nagore and Sikkal
