Area by area

Vientiane neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

Near the Mekong riverfront and Setthathirath Road

Best for: First-time visitors who want to walk to temples and restaurants

Good to know: Wat Si Saket, Haw Phra Kaew, the national museum and the riverfront are close together, with cafes and restaurants all around. The flat streets suit older travellers, though evenings can be noisy near the riverside bars.

  2. 02

Around Patuxai and Lane Xang Avenue

Best for: Travellers who prefer wider streets and a quieter, administrative feel

Good to know: Broader pavements and parks, with embassies and government buildings nearby. You will need a tuk-tuk for most meals and temples, but the area is calmer at night.

  3. 03

    Near Pha That Luang

Best for: Travellers who want a quieter base near the stupa

Good to know: Good for early-morning visits, but about 4 km from the riverfront, so you depend on tuk-tuks or taxis for evening plans.

  4. 04

    Mekong bank outside the centre

Best for: Those wanting space and a resort feel

Good to know: A few riverside properties sit away from the centre, with quieter surroundings but long transfers. Check the distance to the sights before you book.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
