The short answer
Vizianagaram Fort: what visitors should know first
Worth a half day if you like regional history and do not mind that much of the fort is now a college and offices. Go by car, check which parts and the museum are open, and treat it as a town walk, not a ruin.
History and context
The story behind Vizianagaram Fort
The fort was built in 1713 by Maharaja Vijaya Rama Raju, also known as Ananda Raju I, who is said to have chosen the site on the advice of a Muslim saint, Mahabub Valli. The city takes its name from the ruler's name and the idea of victory.
The Moti Mahal was added in 1869 by Vijayarama Raju III as a durbar hall, and was later donated to a trust by Dr P. V. G. Raju. It now holds a college and a museum.

Why it matters
Why Vizianagaram Fort is worth your time
Vizianagaram was the seat of the Vizianagaram rajas, one of the best-known royal families of coastal Andhra, and the fort is the physical centre of the city they founded. Built in 1713 by Maharaja Vijaya Rama Raju, it shows how a regional dynasty combined local building with ideas from elsewhere, including Rajasthani-influenced gateways.
It also shows what happens to old forts that remain in use. Parts have become a college, a museum and offices, and former palaces nearby serve as a police battalion headquarters and a Sainik school. Visiting gives a different picture from a protected ruin: a living urban monument that is partly open and partly not.

How to experience it
Go by car and treat Vizianagaram as a town visit. The fort stands in the middle of the city, so you can combine it with the clock tower, known as Ganta Stambham, which stands just outside it and was modelled on Big Ben, and with the old royal buildings nearby. Start at the east gate, the Nagar khana, with its drum tower, and look at the smaller west gate, which has a Rajasthani-influenced design.
The fort is roughly a square, about 240 metres a side and 10 metres high, with corner bastions and a surrounding moat. Inside, the Moti Mahal, a durbar hall built in 1869, now houses a college and a museum of objects from the former rulers. Access varies, so ask at the gate and be prepared to see only parts.
The fort's guardian deity is the Lakshmi temple known as Kota Shakti. Respect the college and offices inside, and keep photography to public areas.
