The short answer
Best areas to stay in Visakhapatnam
- 01
Beach Road and RK Beach
Best for: Travellers who want to walk to the sea, museums and evening promenades
The main tourist area with hotels at all price points, restaurants and the INS Kursura Museum on your doorstep. Busy and can be noisy, especially in the evening. Ask for a room away from the main road or facing the sea. Many mid-range hotels here have small seaward balconies.
- 02
Petropolis and The Circl
Best for: Families and travellers who want a quieter, modern shopping and dining area
A newer commercial area with malls, restaurants and some hotels. About 15–20 minutes by car from Beach Road and the railway station. Quieter than the main beach area, with good restaurants and a planned layout. Less character but more comfort for those avoiding crowds.
- 03
Old town near the railway station
Best for: Travellers on a tight budget who want authentic bazaar atmosphere
Close to Visakhapatnam Junction for arriving and departing by train. The bazaar is narrow and busy, with many small guest houses and affordable hotels. Noisier and less polished than Beach Road, but real and walkable to temples and markets. Check lift access if travelling with elders.
- 04
Dwaraka Nagar and Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy Central Park area
Best for: Seniors and families who want a calm, central base with parks nearby
A quiet, well-planned residential area with good hospitals, pharmacies and some hotels and guest houses. A short drive or auto ride from Beach Road and all main sights. Practical and peaceful, with access to a large central park. Less colourful than the beach area, but comfortable.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Visakhapatnam
- Kailasagiri is best reached by rope way if climbing is difficult; the park itself is level once you are at the top, with shaded seating and views. Avoid the peak afternoon heat by going early or late.
- Beach Road is a flat, level walk suitable for a slow afternoon stroll, especially in the late afternoon when the light is soft and crowds are less. The promenade has benches and a sea breeze.
- The INS Kursura Submarine Museum has steps to enter the submarine, so if climbing is an issue, the entry hall has photographs and displays of the vessel. The museum is compact and air-conditioned.
- Simhachalam Temple involves climbing a hill, and the temple floors are marble. Wear non-slip shoes or socks and go early when it is cooler. The views from the temple are worth the climb if you can manage it with a rest stop.
