Plan 01

1 day in Wayanad

  1. 01

Day 1: Caves and a waterfall

Leave early (6–7 am) from your base and drive to Edakkal Caves in Sultan Bathery; hire a guide at the entrance. The climb to the rock shelter takes 45 minutes over uneven stone steps. Spend about an hour inside to see the ancient petroglyphs and the panoramic view. Stop for tea and a light breakfast in Sultan Bathery village on the way back. In the afternoon, drive to Soochipara Falls or Banasura Dam, depending on water levels and energy. Take a guide for waterfall trails. Return to base by dusk, and rest.

Plan 02

2 days in Wayanad

  1. 01

Day 1: Edakkal Caves and viewpoints

Start at dawn for Edakkal Caves with a guide, climbing the uneven stone stairs to see the petroglyphs and the forested vista below. Descend by late morning, and stop for a simple Kerala breakfast of puttu or appam in Sultan Bathery. Drive to Chembra Peak for the afternoon—the hike is steep and takes 1–1.5 hours, but the view of a heart-shaped lake in a mountain valley rewards the climb. Alternatively, skip Chembra and instead visit the Jatayou (Sampaje) rock monument for a gentler walk and a view of the Kabani River valley. Return to base, rest and have an early dinner.

  2. 02

Day 2: Waterfalls and a plantation

Sleep in and have a leisurely breakfast. Drive to a major waterfall—Soochipara, Meppadi or Kanthanpara—depending on rainfall and personal energy. Hire a guide and wade into the base pool if water is calm. Have a picnic lunch nearby, or eat at a local warung. In the late afternoon, take a slow drive through a spice plantation (many allow visitors to walk through cardamom and pepper gardens and buy fresh spices). Return to base by sunset.

Plan 03

3 days in Wayanad

  1. 01

Day 1: Edakkal Caves and early exploration

Begin at dawn with a guide to Edakkal Caves, climbing the stone stairs to the rock shelter and viewing the ancient carvings. After descent, stop for a light breakfast in Sultan Bathery. Drive to Kalpetta, the district town, for a walk through the market and a simple lunch. In the afternoon, visit Wayanad Heritage Museum (Kalpetta) or a nearby cardamom plantation for a quiet, educational visit. Return early to base and rest.

  2. 02

Day 2: Chembra Peak or Jatayou, and a waterfall

Tackle Chembra Peak early if fitness allows—the two-hour trek rewards you with a heart-shaped lake and ridge views. If unfit, visit Jatayou Monument for a gentler walk and a river vista. Have lunch at base camp or a nearby cafe. In the afternoon, drive to Soochipara or another major waterfall. Take a guide, swim or wade if you're comfortable, and enjoy the cascade and mist. Return for a rest and a sunset walk near your accommodation.

  3. 03

Day 3: Kuruva Island or a sanctuary visit

Start the day with a slow journey to Kuruva Island (or Kuruva Islands), a river-locked sanctuary near Vythiri. You can walk through bamboo groves and across a rope bridge if the water level allows. Alternatively, spend the morning in Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary if you prefer a guided forest walk. Lunch at a riverside hut or cafe. In the afternoon, drive through tea and spice plantations on a scenic route back. Stop at a viewpoint for sunset photographs, then return to base.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • Book Chembra Peak ahead, not on arrival: Since safety reviews tightened access after 2024, Chembra Peak runs on a strict daily quota with per-group ticketing. Walk-in entry is unreliable; book through the forest development agency or an authorised counter before you travel to the trailhead.
  • Check Kuruva Island's status before planning around it: Kuruva Island closes every monsoon and has stayed shut in several recent seasons beyond the usual closure window. Treat any listed opening date as provisional and confirm directly with the Kerala Forest Department shortly before your visit.
  • Winding roads cause real motion sickness: Wayanad's hill roads have frequent switchbacks. Take motion-sickness medication ahead of long drives, sit toward the front of the vehicle, and ask your driver for occasional stops, particularly with children or older travellers in the car.
  • Mornings are for sightseeing, afternoons are for rest: Mist clings to the hills until mid-morning and burns off by midday, while afternoons turn warm and glary. Plan the day's main activity (a cave, a peak, a waterfall) before lunch, and treat the afternoon as recovery time rather than a second big outing.
  • A car and driver beats self-driving or public buses: Roads are narrow, winding and often poorly signed, and local buses are built for residents' routes rather than tourist circuits. Hire a car with a driver familiar with the district for the length of your stay rather than attempting to self-drive unfamiliar mountain roads.
  • Waterfall access depends on water flow and current rules: Swimming or wading at waterfalls such as Soochipara is allowed only when flow and safety assessments permit it, and can be closed with no notice after heavy rain. Check the day's status before setting out, and never enter water that looks fast-moving regardless of official signage.
