The short answer

Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara: what visitors should know first

Yes, it is the main temple in town and an easy visit near the lake. Go in the cooler hours, dress modestly with covered shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes before entering the grounds.

History and context

The story behind Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara

Wikipedia credits King Kavan Tissa of Ruhuna as the founder, with the Mahavamsa dating construction to the 2nd century BC, though some historians credit King Mahanaga in the 3rd century BC. The monastery was raided by Kalinga Magha's armies in the 13th century and later abandoned. Restoration began in 1858.

Steel cable tendons were added in 1998 to stabilise the dome after cracking. Treat the dates as approximate and ask local monks for the temple's own account.

Why it matters

Why Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara is worth your time

Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara is the living centre of the town's long Buddhist history. Wikipedia describes it as one of four major monasteries founded after the arrival of Mahinda Thera, and as a leading centre of Buddhist learning in the south for many centuries. Today it is still a place where local families come to pray.

For travellers, it also helps explain the landscape. The monastery and Tissa Wewa are linked, because the tank was modified to supply the monastery and irrigate surrounding land. Seeing both together shows how religion and water management shaped the settlement long before the park existed.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Visit in the early morning or late afternoon, with shoulders and knees covered. Leave shoes at the entrance and walk clockwise round the platform that carries the dagoba, as local worshippers do. Offerings of flowers are common, and you may see devotees bathing in the canal before prayer.

The dagoba is the focus. Wikipedia describes it as one of the largest stupas in Sri Lanka, about 156 feet tall and about 550 feet around, a bubble-shaped brick dome on a granite platform. Stand back from it to appreciate the scale, then walk the platform slowly.

Pair the visit with a walk beside Tissa Wewa and with Yatala Vehera, both close by. Keep the temple for a calm part of a safari day, rather than squeezing it in when everyone is tired.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Dress modestly
  • Remove shoes and hats
  • Visit early or late
  • Ask before photographing devotees
