Yelagiri is a modest hill station in Tirupathur district, in the Eastern Ghats of northern Tamil Nadu. It is reached by a mountain road with 14 hairpin bends off National Highway 48, and the climb from the plains is the first sign that you are somewhere cooler and calmer. The hills are mostly reserved forest with a handful of hamlets, and the highest point, Swamimalai, is usually quoted at about 1,410 metres.
Do not expect Ooty or Kodaikanal. Travel writers have described Yelagiri as a one-horse town, and that is part of the appeal. The centre of activity is Punganoor Lake, a small man-made lake with a boat club, a walking path and a children's park, with a landscaped Nature Park across the road. Beyond that there is a hilltop Murugan temple, a forest-department herbal farm, and a few good walks.
The real sport here is walking. Swamimalai can be climbed from Mangalam village in a morning, and the Jalagamparai waterfalls on the Attaru river are worth a half-day after the monsoon, though they dry up in summer. Paragliding is listed among the hills' activities, but availability varies.
For families and older travellers Yelagiri works best as a gentle one or two night break: a lakeside morning, an unhurried afternoon, one outing. Weekends and holidays bring heavy traffic on the hill road, so a midweek stay is calmer. The best months are roughly November to February.
