The short answer

Sonobudoyo Museum: what visitors should know first

Yes, for a rainy or hot afternoon. It is a compact collection of Javanese objects that helps you read what you see at the palace. Check the evening wayang schedule if you want to see a performance.

History and context

The story behind Sonobudoyo Museum

Wikipedia says the museum opened on 6 November 1935 after construction began in 1934, growing from the Java Instituut founded in 1919. The name combines Javanese words for 'place' and 'culture'. The building is in the joglo limasan style and Thomas Karsten is named as architect.

Why it matters

Why Sonobudoyo Museum is worth your time

Sonobudoyo gives you the vocabulary for Javanese culture in one place. Wayang, keris and masks appear throughout the city, and seeing them with labels makes the palace and temples easier to understand. Seeing the objects up close, with labels, also helps when you later watch a shadow-puppet show or a dance performance, because you will recognise the characters and the instruments being used.

It is also one of the few places where an older traveller can sit through a performance in a comfortable setting rather than a crowded hall, and the indoor galleries are a sensible fallback when the afternoon rain arrives.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Walk through the galleries in order and look at the wayang shadow puppets, bronze sculptures, keris and masks. Wikipedia describes the collection as one of the most complete of Javanese artefacts outside the national museum in Jakarta.

The building is in the joglo limasan style, and the architect is named as Thomas Karsten. Look at the roof as well as the displays.

If you want a performance, ask at the desk about the evening wayang and gamelan shows. Wikipedia says they run on most evenings, but check the current schedule rather than assuming.
