Why it matters

Why Goecha La Trek is worth your time

Goecha La is the most famous trek in Sikkim and a defining reason people come to Yuksom. The route runs through Khangchendzonga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and gives some of the closest ground-level views of the world's third-highest mountain.

It also shapes the village. Guides, porters, homestays and agents in Yuksom exist largely because of this trek, so understanding it helps you read the place even if you only visit for a weekend.

How to experience it

The route follows the Dzongri approach and then continues beyond it. A commonly described outline runs from Yuksom to Sachen (about 10 km), Tshoka (about 7 km), Dzongri (about 10 km) and Thansing (about 10 km), then a pre-dawn out-and-back to Goecha La (about 14 km), followed by a return via Tshoka to Yuksom. Operators build in extra days for acclimatisation and weather, so sell-sheets quote anywhere from a week to eleven days.

The pass is reported at about 4,940 m by Wikipedia, while other sources give lower figures, so treat any single number with caution. From the top, on a clear morning, the south-east face of Kanchenjunga rises beyond Goecha Peak. Weather decides everything: spring brings mist and drama, autumn and early winter offer the clearest skies.

If you are not trekking, you can still enjoy the start by walking from Yuksom towards Sachen. Anyone planning the full trek should get a medical check, train for months and leave a spare day at the end.
