Key hubs

Yuksom airport and railway station

Airport
Bagdogra Airport (IXB) near Siliguri in West Bengal is the usual gateway, about 170 km away and roughly 7-8 hours by road via Jorethang; sources differ, so allow a long day.
Railway station
New Jalpaiguri (NJP) near Siliguri, about 150 km away; allow roughly 6-8 hours by road and start before midday, as the road is poorly lit at night.
Getting around
Yuksom is walkable on foot. Shared jeeps run to Jorethang, Geyzing and Pelling, mostly in the morning; hire a car with a driver for Tashiding and Khecheopalri.

Easy transfers to and in Yuksom

  • Allow a slow arrival: Yuksom sits at about 1,780 m, and the long road from Siliguri can tire anyone. Plan an overnight stop or an early start.
  • Carry regular medication and a basic first-aid kit; medical facilities in the village are limited, and the nearest larger hospitals are far away.
  • Avoid travelling the mountain road after dark; it is poorly lit and slow, and landslides are possible during the monsoon.
  • Hire a car with a driver for Tashiding and Khecheopalri, and ask for breaks every hour or so on the winding road.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
