The short answer

Tashiding Monastery: what visitors should know first

A good half-day trip if you have a car. It is far gentler than Dubdi and the setting is lovely. Go in the morning, take the footpath from the market if you can manage it, and check dates for the Bhumchu festival if you want to see it.

History and context

The story behind Tashiding Monastery

The monastery was founded in 1641 by Ngadak Sempa Chempo Phunshok Rigzing, one of the three lamas associated with the 1642 coronation at Yuksom. It was extended in 1717 under the third Chogyal, Chakdor Namgyal.

The Bhumchu festival is held on the 14th and 15th days of the first Tibetan month, usually in February or March.

Why it matters

Why Tashiding Monastery is worth your time

Tashiding is often called the most sacred monastery in Sikkim and the heart of the old Denzong region. It belongs to the Nyingma school and is linked to Guru Padmasambhava. Four meditation caves lie in the four directions around it, and several other monasteries, including Dubdi and Pemayangtse, encircle it on the pilgrimage circuit.

For travellers based at Yuksom it is the easiest way to see a larger working monastery, and it complements the smaller, quieter Dubdi. The effort is far lower, the grounds are more spacious and the setting is among the best in West Sikkim.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The footpath up

A gentle climb from the market past mani stones and prayer wheels.

  2. 02

    Field of chortens

Many chortens crowd the ridge top; walk clockwise.

  3. 03

    Bhumchu festival

A sacred water vase is opened once a year and its level is read as a forecast.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan the visit as a half-day from Yuksom with a driver. Tashiding is on the road towards Jorethang, so a car or shared jeep can drop you near the village; ask your driver to wait. From the market, a footpath climbs gently through a Mani stone wall and prayer wheels to the entrance gate, and there is also a road route if you prefer.

Inside, you pass the Mani Lhakhang, guest house, the main Chogyal Lhakhang, butter-lamp houses and fields of chortens before reaching the Guru Lhakhang. The hilltop setting looks out across the valley with Kanchenjunga behind on a clear day. Walk clockwise round the chortens and allow time to sit.

If you are in Sikkim in February or March, ask about the Bhumchu festival, when a sacred vase of water is opened and the water level is read as a prediction for the year. It is crowded and moving, so book transport and stay ahead.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Hire a car with a driver who will wait
  • Confirm festival dates if you want or wish to avoid crowds
  • Remove shoes and walk clockwise
  • Carry water and sun protection
