Before you go
Yusmarg with elderly parents: what to know
- Keep it to a day trip unless you are comfortable at about 2,400 metres. Cold and thin air tire older visitors faster than expected.
- The meadow is flat and gentle; the trails to Nilnag and Sang-e-Safed are rough and uneven. Choose one and go slowly.
- Carry warm layers even in summer, a rain jacket, and any regular medicines. There is no pharmacy on the meadow.
- Ponies are the easy option for the Nilnag trail; agree the route and charge before setting out.
- Seating and shade are limited. Bring a folding mat or sit in the huts and eating places between walks.
- Check the road and weather with your driver the evening before. Snow and rain can close or slow the route quickly.
Easiest first
Places in Yusmarg sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (2)
- Charar-e-Sharief Shrine (Places of worship · 30–60 minutes) — Short walk from the road on mostly level ground, but you remove shoes and may stand or sit on the floor. Crowds can be heavy on festival days; ask about seating before you go in.
- Yusmarg Meadow (Places to visit · 3–5 hours on the meadow; a full day with the drive) — The meadow floor is broad and mostly level, so short strolls suit most older visitors. Seating and shade are scarce, the air is thin and cold at about 2,400 m, and ponies are available if the walk tires anyone.
Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Nilnag Lake (Places to visit · Half a day including the walk back) — The path is uneven and goes through forest, with roots and loose stones; there is no seating. Fit older walkers can manage with sticks and rests, others are better on a pony or staying on the meadow.
- Tosamaidan (Places to visit · A full day from Srinagar) — The meadow is open ground, but the route is long and rough and there are almost no facilities or seating. Better for fit and adventurous travellers; older visitors should check conditions first.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)
- Sang-e-Safed Valley (Places to visit · A full day, starting at first light) — This is a demanding day hike on rough ground at altitude with no facilities and no easy way out. We would not recommend it to most older visitors; choose Nilnag or the meadow instead.

Practical tips for Yusmarg
- Road and season. Snow closes the road in winter and the meadow is not open to visitors then. Ask your driver or the tourism office about conditions before setting out in April or October.
- Altitude and cold. At about 2,400 metres, evenings are cold even in July. Carry a fleece, a windproof layer and a hat, and take it easy on the first day.
- Getting there. Only local buses to Charar-e-Sharief run publicly. Hire a taxi from Srinagar for the whole trip and agree a return time in advance.
- Ponies and guides. Ponies are the easy way to Nilnag. Agree route, duration and fee beforehand, and hire a guide for Sang-e-Safed.
- Weather. Mountain weather turns fast. Carry rain cover in summer and start walks early, before afternoon cloud and showers.
- Food and water. Eating places are basic and hours vary. Carry water, snacks and any dietary essentials, especially on treks.
- Money and signal. Carry enough cash for ponies, food and tips; card and UPI acceptance on the meadow cannot be relied on, and mobile signal can be patchy.
- Shrine etiquette. At Charar-e-Sharief, dress modestly, cover your head if asked, remove shoes at the entrance and ask before photographing inside.
