The short answer
Chadar Trek: what visitors should know first
Only for fit adults with proper winter gear and an operator. Not for most families or seniors. As a road is built, check whether and how it still runs.
History and context
The story behind Chadar Trek
The Chadar trek follows the frozen Zanskar river for about 105 km one way, and is described as one of the most extreme treks in India. The Border Roads Organisation's Nimmu-Padum-Darcha road is intended to provide year-round connectivity between Leh and Zanskar.

Why it matters
Why Chadar Trek is worth your time
The Chadar is the traditional winter route in and out of Zanskar when snow closes the passes and the river freezes. It has served as a trade and travel route for generations, and it is still significant for local people.
It also matters because the Nimmu-Padum-Darcha road is being completed to give year-round connection, which may change how often the Chadar is used. Locals want the road for emergencies, though the road has also affected wildlife in the valley.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Treat the Chadar as an expedition, not a casual trek. You walk on the frozen Zanskar river, along a gorge with cliffs that rise up to about 600 m and in places is only a few metres wide. The route typically runs about 105 km one way, with a typical day of roughly 16 km on the ice.
A typical trip starts from Chilling, with the first camp at Tilad Sumdo, then passes Tsomo Paldar and Tibb cave, with the turnaround often at the frozen waterfall at Nerak. Variants extend to Lingshed or even to Padum, taking up to two weeks.
Book with a reputable operator, ask about medical cover and evacuation, and bring proper winter gear. The ice changes year to year, so be ready for delays. If this sounds too extreme, choose a summer visit to Padum and the monasteries instead.
