The short answer

Siikhe Lake: what visitors should know first

Yes if you like birds or a quiet walk. It is flat and close to Hapoli, and it is at its best from November to May when migratory birds arrive.

History and context

The story behind Siikhe Lake

The lake was developed as an initiative of former minister Tage Taki, mainly to help groundwater recharge, on land that had been wetland rice fields. Work began around 2000 and the lake was opened in 2019. More than 15 bird species are recorded there each year, and the Ziro Birds Walk team has monitored waterbirds since 2019.

Why it matters

Why Siikhe Lake is worth your time

Siikhe Lake began as an idea to recharge groundwater in the valley. The site was once wetland rice cultivation, and the local community started digging a large pit in the middle of their fields around 2000. The lake was completed and opened in 2019, and it has since become a roost for migratory and resident birds.

It matters as a sign of how the valley is changing. A project aimed at water supply has turned into a bird habitat and a small tourist stop, managed by a local society. For visitors, it is an easy, flat place to see wildlife and to understand how local initiatives shape the landscape.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Go early for the birds. The lake sits in the middle of old paddy land, and from November to May migratory ducks roost here, including species such as mallard, northern shoveler and tufted duck. Mandarin duck is the one many birdwatchers hope to see. Bring binoculars if you have them and keep quiet near the water.

Walk the shore slowly. There is not much shade, so a hat and water are useful. If you want to learn what you are looking at, ask about a guided bird walk through the local team that monitors the waterbirds.

Combine the lake with a village visit or a quiet lunch. In the rainy season the lake is still pleasant but there are fewer birds, and paths can be muddy.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go early in the morning
  • Bring binoculars and a hat
  • Keep quiet near the water
