Why it matters

Why Lungthung View Point is worth your time

Lungthung is where the Silk Route stops feeling like a scenic drive and starts feeling like the high Himalaya. The viewpoint sits above the road's switchbacks and gives the widest outlook of the circuit, taking in the range around Kanchenjunga.

It also shows why the route has seasons: snow arrives early and leaves late up here, which is why access is weather-dependent. For visitors with the stamina and a clear morning, it is the high point of an overnight in Zuluk.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Lungthung needs an earlier start than Thambi, since it is further up the same road. Your driver will plan the timing, usually leaving Zuluk in the dark. Dress for freezing conditions even in spring: thermals, a windproof jacket, gloves and a hat.

At the viewpoint, wait for the eastern sky to lighten. On a clear morning, Kanchenjunga is the highlight, with ridges and valleys revealed in layers. Cloud often forms quickly, so photograph early, then simply watch. Bring binoculars if you like birds, though sightings are never guaranteed.

Keep the stay short. The air is thin, and many people feel better after returning to Zuluk for tea and breakfast. If the road is icy or foggy, accept the decision of your driver to turn back.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Leave in the dark with a driver who knows the road
  • Wear thermals, windproofs, gloves and a hat
  • Keep the stop short if breathless
  • Check the sky before leaving; cloud makes the trip pointless
  • Do not go if the road is icy
