Zuluk village
Best for: Sunrise at Thambi and Lungthung, and a quiet night at altitude
Good to know: Village homestays with simple rooms and home-cooked meals. Sources list several homestays; cold nights and limited heating are the main issues. Book ahead in April-June and October-November.

Nathang Valley
Best for: Kupup, Elephant Lake, the Yak Golf Course and the Baba shrines
Good to know: A very high settlement with homestays and a renovated bungalow per one travel source. Colder and thinner air than Zuluk, so better as the second night than the first.
Sights in this area: Gnathang Gadenchoeling Gumpa

Aritar and Rongli
Best for: Gentle first or last night, older travellers and permit logistics
Good to know: Lower altitude, warmer, with small resorts and homestays at Aritar and basic services at Rongli. A sensible place to acclimatise or recover.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
