This pair of states suits two kinds of trip. The first is heritage and food: Hyderabad's Charminar, Golconda Fort and Qutb Shahi Tombs, followed by the Kakatiya-era temples and fort around Warangal, including the UNESCO-listed Ramappa Temple. The second is pilgrimage: Tirumala above Tirupati is one of the most visited shrines in the world, and the Krishna river city of Vijayawada has the Kanaka Durga temple. Amaravati links the two themes. It is an ancient Buddhist stupa site with a museum, and the name is also used for Andhra Pradesh's planned new capital nearby, which is still under construction after years of delay.

The trade-offs are distance and heat. Hyderabad to Vijayawada is a long road or rail day, and Tirupati and Visakhapatnam sit at opposite ends of Andhra's coast, so a full sweep usually needs a flight or overnight train. April to June is extremely hot across both states. Tirumala darshan can involve very long waits, and bookings, dress rules and queue systems change, so check the temple trust's official channels before you travel.

Choose Hyderabad and Warangal if your parents enjoy monuments and food at an easy pace; Hyderabad has good hotels and short city drives. Choose Tirupati if darshan is the main purpose, and plan it carefully around booking windows and rest. Visakhapatnam adds a calm seafront to finish a longer trip.

Suggested routes

Hyderabad and Warangal in 5 days
  1. Day 1 — Hyderabad. Arrive and rest. In the evening, a drive past Hussain Sagar and dinner of Hyderabadi biryani or haleem, depending on the season.
  2. Day 2 — Hyderabad. Early visit to the Charminar area before traffic and heat build, then Chowmahalla Palace, which is mostly level and shaded. Back for lunch and rest. Evening at a pearl or bangle shop in Laad Bazaar if parents enjoy markets.
  3. Day 3 — Hyderabad. Morning at the Qutb Shahi Tombs, whose gardens are easy walking. Golconda Fort involves a long climb to the top, so parents can enjoy the lower courts and skip the summit. Rest in the afternoon, and consider the sound-and-light show at the fort in the evening.
  4. Day 4 — Warangal. Drive about 3–3.5 hours. After lunch and a rest, visit the Thousand Pillar Temple in Hanamkonda and the Kakatiya stone gateways at Warangal Fort in the late afternoon.
  5. Day 5 — Warangal. Early drive of about 1.5 hours to the Ramappa Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its carved pillars and brackets, and a view of Ramappa Lake. Return via Warangal to Hyderabad (a long day, so build in a proper lunch stop) for the flight home.
Hyderabad to Tirupati in 11 days
  1. Day 1 — Hyderabad. Arrive and rest; an evening drive and a biryani dinner are enough.
  2. Day 2 — Hyderabad. Charminar and Chowmahalla Palace in the morning, rest after lunch, and an evening at the Qutb Shahi Tombs or a relaxed lakeside outing.
  3. Day 3 — Warangal. Drive about 3–3.5 hours. Late afternoon at the Thousand Pillar Temple and Warangal Fort.
  4. Day 4 — Warangal. Morning at the Ramappa Temple, then back to Warangal for lunch and an unhurried afternoon.
  5. Day 5 — Vijayawada. A long road or rail day of about 4–5 hours. Rest on arrival and, if energy allows, an evening view of the Krishna from the riverfront.
  6. Day 6 — Vijayawada. Early visit to the Kanaka Durga Temple on Indrakeeladri hill, using the vehicle road rather than the steps. Afternoon rest; the Undavalli rock-cut caves are a short drive if parents are keen.
  7. Day 7 — Amaravati. Half-day trip of under an hour each way to the ancient Amaravati stupa site and the Archaeological Museum, which holds sculptures from the site. The wider area is also the planned state capital, so expect construction nearby. Back in Vijayawada by mid-afternoon.
  8. Day 8 — Visakhapatnam. Fly or take a train to Visakhapatnam, avoiding the long road journey. Check in near the beach and enjoy a gentle evening on RK Beach.
  9. Day 9 — Visakhapatnam. Morning visit to the Kailasagiri hilltop park by road or ropeway if it is running, then a rest. In the late afternoon, the submarine museum on the beach road or a seafront drive.
  10. Day 10 — Tirupati. Fly to Tirupati and rest. Confirm your darshan booking, dress requirements and ghat road plans for the next day with the temple trust's official channels.
  11. Day 11 — Tirupati. Early drive up to Tirumala for darshan, allowing plenty of time for queues. Return to Tirupati to rest, with an optional short visit to the Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple at Tiruchanur before an evening flight or a further night.

Getting around

How long to plan: 4–5 days for Hyderabad and Warangal; 3–4 days for a Tirupati pilgrimage; 10–12 days to cover both states, using at least one flight or overnight train.

Hyderabad's international airport is the main gateway; Vijayawada, Tirupati and Visakhapatnam also have airports with domestic flights. By road, Warangal is roughly 3–3.5 hours from Hyderabad, and the Ramappa Temple a further 1.5 hours or so. Warangal to Vijayawada is about 4–5 hours, and Amaravati is under an hour from Vijayawada. Vijayawada to Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada to Tirupati are both long journeys (often 6–8 hours by road), so trains or flights are kinder for seniors. Tirumala is reached from Tirupati by a ghat road of about an hour; hedge your plans around current traffic rules and timings.

Travelling with parents

  • For Tirumala, book darshan well ahead through the temple trust's official website and check current rules on dress, age-based queues and what can be carried.
  • Golconda Fort's summit is a steep, uneven climb; the lower courts and gardens give a good sense of the fort without it.
  • Use trains or flights for Vijayawada to Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada to Tirupati rather than full-day road journeys.
  • Hyderabad traffic makes cross-city drives slow; group sights by area and plan one main outing each morning and evening.
  • Hyderabadi and Andhra food can be very spicy; ask for milder versions and keep plain curd rice as a fallback.
  • Carry water, hats and light cotton clothing even in winter, as afternoons at open-air sites such as Ramappa get warm.

Andhra Pradesh & Telangana FAQs

Is Amaravati worth visiting, and is it the new capital?

Both meanings apply. The ancient Amaravati stupa site and its museum are of real interest to anyone who enjoys Buddhist history and sculpture. The name also refers to Andhra Pradesh's planned capital city in the same area, which is still being developed, so do not expect a finished city.

How do we plan a Tirupati visit with elderly parents?

Book darshan in advance through the official temple trust channels, stay in Tirupati or Tirumala the night before, and go early. Check current arrangements for senior citizens, as queue systems and eligibility change.

Can we see Warangal as a day trip from Hyderabad?

It is possible but long, especially with the Ramappa Temple added. An overnight stay in Warangal makes the trip much more comfortable for seniors.

Are the Hyderabad monuments easy to walk?

Chowmahalla Palace and the Qutb Shahi Tombs are mostly level. The Charminar area is crowded, and Golconda Fort has a demanding climb to the top that parents can skip.

What is the best time to visit Andhra Pradesh and Telangana?

November to February is the most comfortable. April to June is extremely hot, and the coast has cyclone risk around October and November.

Is Visakhapatnam a good add-on?

Yes, for a calm finish. It has a long seafront, easy viewpoints and good seafood, but it is far from the other stops, so reach it by train or flight.
