Gujarat suits travellers who want pilgrimage and heritage together, with good roads and vegetarian food almost everywhere. Ahmedabad, the hub, has a UNESCO-listed walled city of pols, stepwells and mosques, as well as Sabarmati Ashram. On the Saurashtra coast, Dwarka and Somnath are two of the most important temple towns in India, both associated with the Char Dham and Jyotirlinga traditions. Kevadia (Ekta Nagar) is home to the Statue of Unity, and Bhuj opens up Kutch, with craft villages and the salt flats of the Great Rann.
The main trade-off is distance. Ahmedabad to Dwarka or Somnath is a full day's journey, and Bhuj is several hours in another direction, so covering everything means long road or rail days or domestic flights. Summer, roughly April to June, is intensely hot, and the White Rann is only at its best in the cooler months, when the Rann Utsav festival also brings crowds. Gujarat is a dry state, which matters to some travellers.
For parents and older travellers, this is one of the more comfortable pilgrimage circuits in India when timed for winter. The temples at Dwarka and Somnath are at street level, with security checks and restrictions on phones and bags, so plan to use lockers and go early. The Statue of Unity has lifts and shuttle buses, and Ahmedabad's heritage walks can be shortened or done partly by car. Choose one or two regions rather than trying to see the whole state in one trip.

Suggested routes
Ahmedabad and the Statue of Unity — 4 days
- Day 1 — Ahmedabad. Arrive and rest. In the late afternoon, visit Sabarmati Ashram, which is level and shaded, then take a short walk along the Sabarmati Riverfront.
- Day 2 — Ahmedabad. An early heritage walk in the old city, shortened to the Swaminarayan Temple and a few pols, or done partly by car. Rest after lunch, then visit Adalaj Stepwell in the late afternoon, viewing from the upper levels if steps are difficult.
- Day 3 — Kevadia. Drive to Kevadia, around three and a half to four hours. Check in, rest, and visit the Statue of Unity in the late afternoon using the shuttle buses and lifts to the viewing gallery. Stay for the evening light show if it is running.
- Day 4 — Kevadia. A gentle morning at one of the gardens around Ekta Nagar, then return to Ahmedabad by road or train for departure.
Kutch, Dwarka and Somnath — 10 days
- Day 1 — Ahmedabad. Arrive, rest and visit Sabarmati Ashram in the late afternoon.
- Day 2 — Ahmedabad. A short old-city heritage walk in the cool morning, lunch and rest, then an early night before the journey to Kutch.
- Day 3 — Bhuj. Fly or drive to Bhuj, the road trip taking around six to seven hours. Rest after arrival and visit Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal from the outside in the evening, as interiors involve stairs.
- Day 4 — Bhuj. Visit craft villages such as Bhujodi in the morning. Rest in the afternoon, then drive to the White Rann near Dhordo for sunset, carrying the required permit, and return to Bhuj or stay at a Rann resort.
- Day 5 — Dwarka. A long drive to Dwarka of roughly seven to eight hours, broken with meal and rest stops. Check in and rest; this is a travel day only.
- Day 6 — Dwarka. Early darshan at the Dwarkadhish Temple, leaving phones and bags in lockers. Rest after lunch, then visit Nageshwar Jyotirlinga or Bet Dwarka by road in the late afternoon.
- Day 7 — Somnath. Drive along the coast to Somnath, around five to six hours, with a stop at Porbandar if you wish. Rest, then attend the evening aarti at Somnath Temple.
- Day 8 — Somnath. Morning darshan at Somnath, then visit Triveni Sangam and Bhalka Tirth nearby. Rest through the afternoon; the sea-facing promenade is pleasant at sunset.
- Day 9 — Somnath. A buffer day to rest or revisit the temple. Alternatively, begin the drive towards Rajkot, Diu or Ahmedabad for easier connections.
- Day 10 — Somnath. Depart via the nearest airport or by train from Veraval, allowing plenty of time for the road transfer.
Getting around
Ahmedabad's airport and main railway station are the gateways, with smaller airports at Bhuj, Jamnagar (nearest for Dwarka), Porbandar and Rajkot, and railway stations at Dwarka, Veraval (for Somnath), Bhuj and Ekta Nagar (for Kevadia). Most families use a hired car with a driver. Ahmedabad to Kevadia is usually around three and a half to four hours by road; Ahmedabad to Dwarka or Somnath is roughly seven to eight hours; Dwarka to Somnath along the coast about five to six hours; and Ahmedabad to Bhuj roughly six to seven hours. The White Rann near Dhordo is around one and a half to two hours from Bhuj, and visitors have typically needed a permit, which can be obtained online or at the checkpoint; confirm current rules with Gujarat Tourism.
Travelling with parents
- Travel between November and February; summer heat in Gujarat is hard on older travellers.
