The Kashmir Valley is a compact mountain holiday built around one base. Srinagar offers Dal Lake, shikara rides, houseboats and the Mughal gardens, and three very different excursions sit within a few hours: Gulmarg for its gondola and winter snow, Pahalgam for river valleys and pine forest, and Sonamarg for glacier views on the road towards Ladakh. It suits couples, families wanting cool summer weather, and anyone who wants snow in winter without a long expedition.
The trade-offs are mostly altitude, weather and conditions on the ground. Srinagar sits at roughly 1,600 metres, but Gulmarg and Sonamarg are well above 2,500 metres, and the upper gondola stage at Gulmarg reaches close to 4,000 metres. Winter brings heavy snow, road closures and flight delays, and Sonamarg's road can be shut for much of the cold season. Summer crowds peak in May and June, and the Amarnath Yatra in July and August affects traffic around Pahalgam and Sonamarg. The security situation can change, so check current government advisories before and during the trip.
For parents and seniors, Kashmir works well with Srinagar as a fixed base and day trips kept unhurried. Shikara rides and garden visits need little effort. Houseboats involve getting in and out of small boats and sometimes steep gangways, so a lakeside hotel may suit less mobile travellers better. Older travellers with heart, lung or blood-pressure conditions should consult a doctor before going above Gulmarg's first gondola stage.

Suggested routes
5-day Srinagar, Gulmarg & Pahalgam
- Day 1 — Srinagar. Arrive and settle into a houseboat or lakeside hotel. Rest after the flight, then take a gentle sunset shikara ride on Dal Lake.
- Day 2 — Srinagar. Visit the Mughal gardens, Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, in the morning; both are terraced, so take the steps slowly. Rest after lunch, then an evening drive along the Boulevard.
- Day 3 — Gulmarg. Day trip to Gulmarg, roughly 1.5–2 hours each way. Ride the first stage of the gondola if booked, enjoy the meadow views and return to Srinagar by late afternoon to rest.
- Day 4 — Pahalgam. Drive to Pahalgam, roughly 2.5–3 hours, stopping briefly at saffron fields in season. Check in, rest and take an easy walk along the Lidder river.
- Day 5 — Pahalgam to Srinagar. A short morning outing by local taxi to a nearby valley such as Betaab, if open, then return to Srinagar for your flight or an extra night.
7-day Kashmir with Sonamarg
- Day 1 — Srinagar. Arrive, rest and take an evening shikara ride.
- Day 2 — Srinagar. Mughal gardens in the morning, a long rest, then a visit to the old city or Hazratbal shrine in the evening.
- Day 3 — Sonamarg. Day trip to Sonamarg, roughly 2.5–3 hours each way. Enjoy the valley and glacier views from the meadow; the pony ride towards Thajiwas glacier is optional and rough. Return to Srinagar to rest.
- Day 4 — Gulmarg. Drive to Gulmarg and stay overnight. Ride the gondola's first stage in the morning, then rest in the afternoon to adjust to the altitude.
- Day 5 — Gulmarg to Pahalgam. A slow morning in Gulmarg, then the longer drive to Pahalgam via Srinagar, roughly 4–5 hours. Rest on arrival.
- Day 6 — Pahalgam. Visit Aru or Betaab valley by local taxi in the morning, if open, then rest by the river in the afternoon.
- Day 7 — Srinagar. Return to Srinagar, roughly 2.5–3 hours, for a final lake view and your departure.
Getting around
Srinagar's Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai and other cities. By rail, the line through the valley now connects with Jammu and Katra, so check current services on the official railway booking site. Within the valley, most visitors hire a car with driver from Srinagar. Approximate road times, traffic and weather dependent: Srinagar to Gulmarg roughly 1.5–2 hours, Srinagar to Pahalgam roughly 2.5–3 hours, and Srinagar to Sonamarg roughly 2.5–3 hours. At Pahalgam and Sonamarg, local rules often require using local taxis or ponies for side valleys and viewpoints.
Travelling with parents
- Keep Srinagar as the main base and do Gulmarg and Sonamarg as day trips if altitude is a concern; sleeping at lower altitude is generally easier on the body.
- Older travellers with heart, lung or blood-pressure conditions should consult a doctor before the trip, and especially before riding the upper gondola stage at Gulmarg, which reaches close to 4,000 metres.
- Getting in and out of shikaras and houseboats needs balance; ask for help at the steps, or choose a lakeside hotel if mobility is limited.
