Mumbai is the natural entry point to western India, and Maharashtra around it covers an unusually wide range of trips. The city itself offers colonial-era architecture, the sea front at Marine Drive and the Gateway of India, museums and food. Within a few hours are the weekend retreats of Lonavala and Mahabaleshwar in the Sahyadri hills, the beach town of Alibaug across the harbour, and Pune with its Maratha history. Further inland, Nashik combines ghats, Trimbakeshwar and vineyards; Shirdi draws devotees of Sai Baba; and Aurangabad (officially Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) is the base for the UNESCO-listed Ellora and Ajanta caves.

The trade-off is that these are really two different trips. The coastal and hill-station side (Mumbai, Alibaug, Lonavala, Pune, Mahabaleshwar) suits short breaks and weekends. The pilgrimage and heritage side (Nashik, Shirdi, Aurangabad) involves long road days inland. Mumbai's traffic can make short distances slow, the monsoon from roughly June to September is very heavy, and April and May are hot inland.

For parents and older travellers, the pilgrimage route is popular and manageable when paced with overnight stays rather than day trips from Mumbai. Shirdi and Trimbakeshwar can have long queues, so ask about official darshan options and go at quieter times. Ellora is largely at ground level for the main caves, while Ajanta involves more steps and a longer day. Hill stations are pleasant but their viewpoints often need short walks on uneven ground.

Best season
Roughly October to February is the most comfortable time across the region. The monsoon (about June to September) turns the hills green but brings heavy rain, slippery ghats and disruption in Mumbai, and April to May can be very hot around Nashik, Shirdi and Aurangabad.

Getting around

Mumbai's international airport is the main gateway, with airports also at Pune, Shirdi and Aurangabad; Mumbai's railway termini connect to Pune, Nashik and Aurangabad. Most families travel between destinations by hired car. Mumbai to Pune usually takes around three to four hours by the expressway, with Lonavala on the way at about two to two and a half hours from Mumbai. Pune to Mahabaleshwar is typically around three hours on ghat roads. For Alibaug, ferries from the Gateway of India area to Mandwa plus a short road transfer are often quicker than the drive, though services may be reduced in the monsoon. Inland, Mumbai to Nashik is roughly four to five hours, Nashik to Shirdi about two to two and a half hours, and Shirdi to Aurangabad around three hours, depending on traffic.

Travelling with parents

  • Pace the pilgrimage route with overnight stays in Nashik and Shirdi rather than long day trips from Mumbai.
  • At Shirdi and Trimbakeshwar, ask at the official counters about queue options for senior citizens and go early in the day.
  • Leave Mumbai early in the morning or after the rush; traffic can double journey times.
  • Carry motion-sickness remedies for the ghat roads to Mahabaleshwar and Lonavala, and plan short stops.
  • At Ellora, stick to the main caves near the entrance; Ajanta involves many steps and a long drive, so treat it as optional.
  • Avoid the peak monsoon for hill stations, when viewpoints are slippery and misty.

Mumbai & Maharashtra FAQs

Can we do Shirdi as a day trip from Mumbai?

It is possible but tiring, with several hours of driving each way. An overnight stay in Shirdi, or pairing it with Nashik, is more comfortable for older travellers.

Which is better for parents, Lonavala or Mahabaleshwar?

Lonavala is closer to Mumbai and Pune and suits a short break. Mahabaleshwar is cooler and quieter but further, with longer ghat drives.

Are Ellora and Ajanta suitable for seniors?

Ellora's main caves are relatively accessible with short walks. Ajanta is further away and involves many steps along a cliff path, so it suits fitter travellers.

Is Maharashtra good to visit in the monsoon?

The hills and ghats are green and popular, but heavy rain can cause slippery paths, landslides and traffic delays. For older travellers, October to February is usually easier.

How do we get to Alibaug from Mumbai?

Ferries from the Gateway of India area to Mandwa, followed by a short road transfer, are often quicker than driving. Services can be reduced during the monsoon, so check before travelling.

What is the wine region near Nashik like?

Nashik has several vineyards with tasting rooms and restaurants, usually busiest on weekends. They are pleasant for a relaxed afternoon, even for non-drinkers.
