Varanasi Ganga Weekend

A river-focused weekend in Varanasi: two Ganga aartis, a sunrise boat ride, a walk along the ghats and a handful of the city's classic food stops, all at a pace that leaves room to simply sit and watch.

Day by day

  1. Day 1 — Arrive, Dashashwamedh aarti from a boat

Transfer from the airport or station to a hotel near the ghats, choosing one with vehicle access if anyone in the group prefers less walking. Rest through the afternoon. About an hour before sunset, board a pre-arranged boat to watch the Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat from the water — boats fill up on weekends and festival days, so we book ahead. Afterwards, a short walk to Kashi Chaat Bhandar for tamatar chaat and other Banarasi snacks, then back to the hotel.

  2. Day 2 — Sunrise boat, ghat walk and a lassi stop

Wake early for a sunrise boat ride from Assi or Dashashwamedh, passing Kedar Ghat's colourful steps and the long line of ghats in soft morning light. Manikarnika, the cremation ghat, is observed quietly from the boat; photography there is considered disrespectful. After breakfast and a rest, take a short, guided ghat walk between Kedar and Dashashwamedh, with the option to cut it short and take a cab. Stop at Blue Lassi in the lanes near Manikarnika for a thick, fruit-topped lassi. Lunch and a long rest. In the evening, watch the Assi Ghat aarti, which is usually calmer than the main one.

  3. Day 3 — Slow morning by the river and departure

Take a last quiet hour by the river — the morning aarti at Assi Ghat, often accompanied by music and yoga, is an optional early start. Breakfast, checkout and some time for Banarasi silk or brassware if you'd like to shop. Transfer to the airport or station with a comfortable buffer, since traffic near the old city can be slow.

Senior and family comfort notes

  • Boarding boats involves steps and a small step down; boatmen and our team help steady travellers

  • Old-city lanes are narrow, crowded and uneven, so food stops are kept short
  • Aarti is watched from a boat rather than standing on crowded steps
