How to reach Agartala by air

Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport (IXA) lies north of the city, about 30–45 minutes by road to the centre depending on traffic. It is the quickest way to reach Tripura, with flights from Kolkata, Guwahati and other cities; check current schedules.

How to reach Agartala by train

Agartala station (AGTL) is a few kilometres from the centre. Trains reach Tripura through the Assam hills, so the rail journey from most of India is long; check current services before relying on it.

How to reach Agartala by road

Roads run north through Dharmanagar towards Assam and the rest of India, but the journey is long and passes through hill sections, so most visitors fly. Within Tripura, roads connect Agartala to Udaipur, Melaghar and Kailashahar.

Getting around Agartala

Autos, e-rickshaws and cabs work in the city. A hired car and driver is the easiest way to reach Neermahal, Tripura Sundari, Sepahijala and Unakoti, and to keep a flexible schedule.

Easy transfers to and in Agartala

  • Hire a car with a driver for Tripura Sundari, Sepahijala and Neermahal rather than relying on shared transport, and travel in the cooler months.
  • Treat Unakoti as an overnight trip: the drive to the north of the state is long and the site involves steps and uneven forest paths.
  • Carry an umbrella and light waterproofs outside winter; rain can arrive quickly and last through the day, especially from May to September.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
