Plan 01

1 day in Agartala

  1. 01

Day 1: Palace, temple and park

Start at Ujjayanta Palace when it opens and give the museum galleries and the lake-side gardens about two hours. Walk through the palace grounds to the Jagannath Mandir and the neighbouring Lakshmi Narayan temple. After lunch and a rest, visit Heritage Park to see the miniature versions of Unakoti, Neermahal and Tripura Sundari, which will help you choose your day trips. End with a slow walk in Rabindra Kanan, the public garden in the old Kunjaban grounds, and an early dinner of Tripuri or Bengali food.

UnakotiHalf-day on site; a full day or overnight with travelDemandingDry months from November to March
NeermahalHalf-day to a full day including the driveModerateClear mornings from November to February

Pace: Unakoti involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Unakoti: The site involves steps, uneven forest paths and damp ground. Take it slowly, wear shoes with grip, and consider a guide. The long drive is itself tiring, so an overnight stay helps.

With parents at Neermahal: The boat landing and steps can be awkward for those with limited mobility, and the palace has stairs and uneven areas. Choose a calm day, ask about assistance at the landing and take it slowly.

Plan 02

2 days in Agartala

  1. 01

    Day 1: The royal centre

Spend the morning at Ujjayanta Palace and the temples in its grounds. After lunch, visit Heritage Park and then Rabindra Kanan, where the old Pushbanta Palace stands on the Kunjaban hillock. Look in at Benuban Vihar, the Buddhist temple in the same area, if energy allows, and finish with dinner built around Tripuri dishes.

Benuban Vihar30 to 45 minutesEasyMorning; Buddha Purnima for festivities

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

  2. 02

Day 2: Neermahal or Tripura Sundari

Leave early for Neermahal, about 53 km away at Melaghar, and take the boat across Rudrasagar Lake. On the return, either stop at Sepahijala for a short walk, or, on another day, drive to Udaipur for the Tripura Sundari temple and Kalyan Sagar. Back in the city, browse bamboo and cane goods and handloom textiles at the Purbasha emporium.

Tripura Sundari TempleHalf-day including the driveModerateWeekday mornings; avoid the Diwali fair

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Neermahal: The boat landing and steps can be awkward for those with limited mobility, and the palace has stairs and uneven areas. Choose a calm day, ask about assistance at the landing and take it slowly.

With parents at Tripura Sundari Temple: The temple is on a hillock with steps and an approach path, so allow time and take breaks. Crowds can be heavy, and the floor can be hot or wet.

Plan 03

3 days in Agartala

  1. 01

    Day 1: The royal centre

Ujjayanta Palace and its gardens in the morning, the Jagannath Mandir and the Lakshmi Narayan temple next to it, then a rest. In the late afternoon visit Heritage Park and Rabindra Kanan.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Neermahal and Sepahijala

Drive to Neermahal for the boat to the water palace, and combine it with Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary, which lies on the same side of the city. Keep the afternoon free, because the monsoon months can turn roads and landings difficult.

With parents at Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary: Paths are mostly flat, with some walking on forest tracks. Shade is good, but benches are limited and rain can make tracks slippery.

  3. 03

Day 3: Tripura Sundari or an Unakoti overnight

Take a morning drive to the Tripura Sundari temple at Udaipur and walk to the Kalyan Sagar lake beside it. If you want Unakoti, treat it as an overnight trip from the city, not a day trip: the site is a long drive away in the north of the state, near Kailashahar. Otherwise spend the afternoon at Benuban Vihar, the Gedu Mian mosque and Purbasha for crafts.

Pacing

Pacing a Agartala trip for parents and children

  • Plan one main sight in the morning, a long lunch and rest, then a light evening plan. Humidity makes afternoons tiring even outside the summer months.
  • The central sights are flat and close together. Ujjayanta Palace, the Jagannath Mandir and Rabindra Kanan involve little climbing, but expect some steps at temple entrances and lakeside landings.
  • Neermahal needs a boat ride and a landing stage, which can be awkward for anyone with limited mobility. Confirm with the operator that boats are running and ask about help at the landing.
  • Hire a car with a driver for Tripura Sundari, Sepahijala and Neermahal rather than relying on shared transport, and travel in the cooler months.
  • Treat Unakoti as an overnight trip: the drive to the north of the state is long and the site involves steps and uneven forest paths.
  • Carry an umbrella and light waterproofs outside winter; rain can arrive quickly and last through the day, especially from May to September.
