The short answer

Neermahal: what visitors should know first

Yes, if the weather is clear and you can manage a boat ride. Allow a half-day with the drive. Confirm that boats are running before leaving, and avoid the heaviest rain months.

History and context

The story behind Neermahal

Construction of Neermahal began in 1930 and was reported to have stopped in 1938, though Wikipedia also gives 1921 for an earlier phase, so treat dates as approximate. The palace was commissioned by Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur as a summer retreat. Royal parties once travelled to it by hand-rowed boat from Rajghat.

Why it matters

Why Neermahal is worth your time

Neermahal is the symbol of Tripura's royal summer retreats and the largest water palace in India. Construction began in 1930 under Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, who built it as a summer residence in the middle of Rudrasagar Lake, and it blends Hindu and Mughal architecture.

Its significance for a visitor lies in the setting. The only comparable lake palace in India, Jal Mahal in Rajasthan, is smaller. Neermahal gives Tripura a monument that works as landscape and architecture at once, and it is a rare chance to reach a palace by boat. The annual Neermahal Water Festival, held in August, adds boat races and cultural programmes.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Leave Agartala early and give yourself the full morning. The drive takes roughly an hour or more depending on traffic, ending at the lake edge near Melaghar. Buy boat tickets, confirm return times and board a boat for the short crossing.

On the water, notice the way the palace seems to float, with balconies, towers, pavilions, bridges and dome-shaped minarets in marble and sandstone. Inside, the building has about 24 rooms, with the Andar Mahal on the west for the royal family and an open-air theatre on the east. Take time to walk the stairs to the landing steps and look back across the lake.

Plan to return before the afternoon heat. If you have energy, add Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary on the way back, or end with tea by the lake.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Confirm boats are running before leaving
  • Leave early and return before afternoon heat
  • Wear shoes with grip for the landing
  • Check fees and timings locally
