Why it matters

Why Tripura Sundari Temple is worth your time

Tripura Sundari is the state's most important religious site. Tradition says the shrine was established around 1501 by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya after a dream, on a hillock near Udaipur. It is counted as one of the 51 Shakta pithas, where a part of Sati's body is said to have fallen, and its hilltop is likened to a tortoise hump, giving the name Kurma Pitha.

For travellers, it is a window into living devotion in Tripura and into the royal link between faith and rule. The temple draws huge crowds at Diwali and ranks near the top among North-East shrines for visitor numbers.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Drive from Agartala to Udaipur, roughly 55 km, and plan to arrive in the morning. Climb the steps to the shrine, remove shoes and join the queue. The main shrine is square, about 24 feet at the base and 75 feet tall, built in the Bengali ek-ratna style, and its inner sanctum holds two black stone images of the goddess.

After darshan, walk to Kalyan Sagar, the lake beside the temple, where rare turtles are held sacred. The ghats and lake edge are a good place to rest. A small cafeteria and rest areas stand nearby.

Avoid the Diwali fair, when more than 200,000 pilgrims may come, unless the festival is the point of your trip. Keep your plan flexible, and pair it with a stop at Neermahal or a lakeside rest.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Dress modestly and remove shoes
  • Avoid Diwali week unless attending the fair
  • Know that animal sacrifice is part of worship
