Plan 01

1 day in Agra

  1. 01

Day 1: Taj Mahal morning, Fort afternoon

Arrive before 7 a.m. at the Taj Mahal's east gate, spend 2–2.5 hours inside (hire a guide if you want the marble inlay details; it changes the experience entirely), and visit the Yamuna side for the reflection pools. Return to your hotel for lunch and a rest. In the early afternoon, visit Agra Fort: walk the courtyards, the Khas Mahal, the Diwan-i-Khas, and climb to the uppermost points for a view of the Taj in the distance. End with a short visit to Jama Masjid in the old city, then a sunset walk by the Yamuna.

Plan 02

2 days in Agra

  1. 01

Day 1: Taj Mahal at sunrise and Agra Fort's full day

Enter the Taj Mahal before sunrise for the dawn light and smaller crowds, spend 2.5 hours inside with a guide, then return for breakfast. Rest until late morning. Spend the afternoon and early evening at Agra Fort: explore the three-storey Khas Mahal, the Diwan-i-Khas with its carved marble screens, the courtyards and, if energy allows, the upper ramparts for the Taj view. Walk through the old city bazaars around Jama Masjid as the light softens, stopping for chikhalwali (papaya candy) or other local sweets.

  2. 02

Day 2: Fatehpur Sikri, or the Taj from other angles, or Ghat Road walks

Option 1: Leave early for Fatehpur Sikri (roughly 40 kilometres, 1–1.5 hours by road). Spend the morning walking the Diwan-i-Aam, Diwan-i-Khas, Panch Mahal and Jama Masjid, then return for lunch. Option 2: If you prefer to stay in Agra, visit the Taj from Mehtab Bagh (Moonlight Garden) on the west bank of the Yamuna—fewer people, a good view, and a different angle. Spend the afternoon at Itimad-ud-Daulah, a smaller, inlaid marble tomb by the river, then walk along Ghat Road to see temples and the river life.

Plan 03

3 days in Agra

  1. 01

Day 1: Taj Mahal at sunrise, full Fort visit

Be at the Taj before 6:30 a.m., spend a full morning inside with a guide to understand the inlay work and proportions, then rest at midday. In the late afternoon, visit Agra Fort and walk all the main courtyards: Diwan-i-Aam, Khas Mahal, Diwan-i-Khas, and if the stairs don't daunt, the upper ramparts. End with a quiet walk through the old city and dinner in a traditional restaurant.

  2. 02

Day 2: Fatehpur Sikri's full day

Leave early for Fatehpur Sikri. Visit the Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience), the red-sandstone Diwan-i-Khas, the five-storey Panch Mahal (one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture), the serene Jama Masjid with its adjoining courtyard, and climb to the tombs of Salim Chishti and Mariam-uz-Zamani if you have energy. The site rewards a slow walk; the red sandstone glows in late afternoon light.

  3. 03

Day 3: Hidden sides of Agra

Visit Itimad-ud-Daulah early, a smaller tomb with intricate marble inlay work overlooking the Yamuna. Then visit Ram Bagh (one of the oldest Mughal gardens) or walk Ghat Road to see temples, the river and the rhythm of the city. Visit one of the marble workshops where artisans still do inlay work by hand—the Agra Marble Company or a smaller workshop in the old city. End with a visit to Jama Masjid and the old city bazaars, shopping for marble inlay work, leather goods or textiles.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • Visit the Taj Mahal before 7 a.m. to avoid crowds and heat. Use the wheelchair-accessible ramp on the south side if needed, and rest in the shaded arcades inside.
  • Agra Fort has uneven ground and multiple staircases. The Khas Mahal is level and the main sights are accessible with patient walking; climb to the upper ramparts only if you are comfortable with stairs.
  • Fatehpur Sikri is very exposed and hot in the afternoon. Start early, carry water and a hat, and rest in the shaded Jama Masjid. Skip it if mobility is a serious concern; the uneven ground and distances can be exhausting.
  • Plan one major sight in the morning, rest at midday (absolutely essential—the heat is severe), and a gentle evening plan. Hire a car and driver for the full day rather than relying on tuk-tuks; it gives you a cool place to rest and avoids long walks.
  • Choose a hotel on The Mall Road or central Agra rather than Taj Ganj. You will need quietness and car access more than a pre-dawn walk to the Taj's gate.
  • Carry water, a hat, sunscreen and socks for temple and mosque floors. Marble can be very hot underfoot, and the noon sun reflecting off white marble is intense.
