Plan 01

1 day in Agumbe

  1. 01

Day 1: Village, falls and sunset

Arrive in the morning and walk through the village main street, looking at the Malnad-style houses and asking about Dodda Mane, the Malgudi Days house. In the late morning, take the short forest walk to Jogigundi Falls if it is flowing. After lunch, rest, then walk to the Sunset Point about an hour before sunset and stay until the light has gone. If you are driving on, leave only in daylight because the ghat road is winding.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Jogigundi FallsAbout 1.5 to 2 hours returnModerateLate monsoon to early winter, when the water is flowing

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Jogigundi Falls: The walk is short but on forest paths that are uneven and slippery after rain, with some steps and rocks near the pool. Fit older walkers can manage it slowly; take a stick, wear good shoes and expect no seating.

Plan 02

2 days in Agumbe

  1. 01

    Day 1: Village and sunset

Spend the afternoon on the main street and, if arranged, a visit to the Malgudi Days house. Walk to Sunset Point about an hour before sunset, then dine simply in the village and sleep early.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Forest and hilltop

Start early with Jogigundi Falls and, if you are fit and have checked access, the Barkana Falls trail. Drive to Kundadri Hills in the late morning to see the Jain temple and the view. Return via the ghat road by daylight to Udupi or onwards.

Plan 03

3 days in Agumbe

  1. 01

    Day 1: Village and sunset

Arrive, settle in and walk the main street. Visit Sunset Point before dusk. Keep the evening quiet.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Waterfalls

Do Jogigundi in the morning, and if permissions allow and you are fit, Barkana Falls or Onake Abbi with a local guide. Rest in the afternoon. Enquire about a visit to the Agumbe Rainforest Research Station, if arrangements are open.

  3. 03

Day 3: Hilltop and the coast road

Drive to Kundadri in the morning, then descend the ghat road to Someshwara, where you could try Kudlu Teertha Falls only if open and you have time. Continue to Udupi by afternoon.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Kudlu Teertha FallsHalf a day including drivingModerateOctober to February; the monsoon is wet and access may be restricted

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Kudlu Teertha Falls: After a long drive, there is a walk of a few kilometres on forest paths with slippery sections and no seating. It is not suitable for older travellers with limited mobility, and you are expected to leave the forest before late afternoon.

Pacing

Pacing a Agumbe trip for parents and children

  • Choose Sunset Point, the main street and Kundadri hilltop, which are easy, and leave the waterfall treks to the fitter members of the group.
  • Facilities are basic, so carry medicines, water, snacks and a torch, and check hot water and power backup in advance.
  • The ghat road has many hairpin bends; seat anyone prone to motion sickness in front and travel in daylight only.
  • Visit between November and February when it is clear and cool; the monsoon makes paths slippery and views disappear.
  • If you want comforts, stay in Udupi and make Agumbe a long day trip with a driver.
  • Keep a rain layer and non-slip shoes even in winter, as mist and drizzle can arrive at short notice.
