   Day 1: Ashram, old city and bazaar

   Start early at Sabarmati Ashram for a quiet hour before crowds, exploring Gandhi's rooms, the charkha (spinning wheel) display and the riverside gardens. Return to the old city for breakfast and a walk to the Sidi Saiyad Mosque to see the famous stone jali (lattice screens) in soft morning light. Climb to the top of Bhadra Fort for a view over the old city. Visit the Jama Masjid briefly, then stop for a long lunch at a haveli or restaurant in the old city. Spend the late afternoon browsing Law Garden or Manekchowk market, buying textiles or snacks. End with an evening walk near Kankaria Lake or a quiet moment at the Hutheesing Temple at dusk. Dinner at a traditional Gujarati restaurant along Ashram Road.

   Day 1: Ashram and the old city gates

   Early morning at Sabarmati Ashram, spending 2–3 hours to absorb the space, read the exhibits and walk the riverside gardens. Stop for breakfast near the ashram gate. Drive to the old city and walk the perimeter via the gates—Raipur Gate, Paldi Gate, Darwaza—to sense the medieval city's scale. Visit Sidi Saiyad Mosque and spend time with the jali screens. Lunch at a small restaurant serving Gujarati thali. In the late afternoon, walk through Maniar's Haveli to see the ornate woodwork and painted walls. Climb to the rooftop for a view of the old city as light softens. Evening stroll through Law Garden or the lanes around Bhadra Fort.

   Day 2: Museums, Jama Masjid and textiles

   Visit the Calico Museum of Textiles in the morning for 1.5–2 hours; it is air-conditioned, beautiful and essential for understanding Gujarat's craft heritage. Lunch and a rest in the middle of the day. In the late afternoon, visit the Jama Masjid, one of India's largest, to see the intricate stone and wooden screens. If interested in automobiles, visit the Vintage Car Museum nearby. Otherwise, explore Manekchowk market for street food, snacks and casual shopping. End the day at Kankaria Lake gardens at sunset, or visit a local science or art museum if energy remains. Dinner at a restaurant in the newer city, such as near C.G. Road or along Ashram Road.

3 days in Ahmedabad

1. 01

   Day 1: Ashram, gates and riverside walk

   Spend a full morning (3 hours) at Sabarmati Ashram, reading carefully and sitting by the river. Walk to the ashram gate area and nearby cafés for breakfast or chai. Return to the hotel to rest if needed. In the late afternoon, drive to the old city and walk from Raipur Gate, stopping at small temples, stepwells (baoris) and quiet courtyards as you discover them. Visit Sidi Saiyad Mosque and linger with its famous jali. Walk the lanes around Bhadra Fort for street scenes. Have dinner at a hole-in-the-wall khichdi or thali restaurant, the kind where locals eat.

   Day 2: Havelis, Jama Masjid and Calico Museum

   Explore Maniar's Haveli and Ahmad Shah's Mosque in the morning, seeing the painted woodwork, screens and courtyards. Walk to the adjacent Hutheesing Temple if you wish to see Jain architecture. Visit the Jama Masjid and climb to see the courtyard and prayer hall. Lunch at Manekchowk market with a mix of street food and chat stalls. In the afternoon, visit the Calico Museum of Textiles, one of Asia's finest, for an in-depth look at Gujarat's textile heritage and Indian fabrics. Rest at the hotel. Evening at the Vintage Car Museum if automobiles interest you, or a visit to the City Museum or Shreyas Folk Museum. Dinner at a restaurant on C.G. Road or Ashram Road.

   Day 3: Day trip to Adalaj Stepwell, shopping and riverside sunset

   Early morning drive to Adalaj Stepwell, about 20 km north; it is a five-storey stepwell with intricate stone carvings and a peaceful courtyard atmosphere. Spend about an hour here. Return to Ahmedabad and visit the textile shops and emporiums along Ashram Road or in the old city to buy block-printed fabrics, bandhani or knitwear. Lunch at a café on Ashram Road. Spend the late afternoon at Kankaria Lake gardens, sitting by the water or visiting the toy train and gardens. In the evening, take a walk along the Sabarmati river promenade near the ashram or visit the small Akshardham-style temple near the river. End with a sunset view and dinner at a rooftop restaurant or a quiet Gujarati meal.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

• Sabarmati Ashram is level and can be visited at a gentle pace. The gardens are peaceful and there are benches for resting. Spend 2–3 hours rather than rushing.
• The old city's lanes are uneven and narrow. Choose the Sidi Saiyad Mosque, Jama Masjid and Maniar's Haveli as main sights. Skip the very steep climbs at Bhadra Fort unless you are fit.
• Hire a car and driver for the whole day. It allows rest between sights, avoids long walks and provides escape from heat and crowds.
• Museums (Calico, Auto, City) are air-conditioned and largely level, making them ideal afternoon breaks in a sightseeing day.
• Stay on Ashram Road or in C-Scheme for easy access, calm surroundings and proximity to restaurants and hospitals.
• Carry water, a hat, sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes. Marble and stone in temples and havelis can be very hot underfoot.
