The short answer

Best areas to stay in Ahmedabad

  1. 01

Old city edge (Bhadra Fort, Manekchowk, Law Garden area)

Best for: Travellers who want to walk to the walled city's monuments and bazaars

Authentic for atmosphere and early-morning market access. The trade-offs are narrow lanes where cars cannot easily reach, traffic, and noise from the bazaars. Haveli stays offer character but may have limited lifts and modern amenities. Check vehicle drop-off and access carefully with elders.

  2. 02

Ashram Road and Ashram Gate area

Best for: Pilgrims visiting the ashram, families and seniors seeking quiet access

Close to Sabarmati Ashram and peaceful riverside gardens. This area is orderly, well-planned and quieter than the old city. About 15–20 minutes by car to the walled city. Good restaurants, cafés and hospitals nearby. A practical choice for older travellers.

  3. 03

    C-Scheme

Best for: Families wanting a calm, central and modern base

A leafy, planned residential area with shopping, dining and medical facilities. About 20–30 minutes by car to the old city, traffic dependent. Safe, comfortable, and preferred by families and seniors. Less character than Ashram Road, but more options.

  4. 04

    C.G. Road

Best for: Convenience, shopping and nightlife

Ahmedabad's main commercial road, with plenty of malls, restaurants and mid-range hotels. About 20–25 minutes by car to the old city. Busy and noisy, so ask for a room away from the road. Good for families who want modern amenities and dining variety.

  5. 05

    Near Sabarmati Riverfront

Best for: A quiet experience with views of the river and the ashram

Several newer hotels and resorts line the Sabarmati. Peaceful, with good views and proximity to the ashram. Less walking access to the old city, so a car is essential. Nice for sunset walks along the promenade.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

For parents and senior travellers

Comfort notes for Ahmedabad

  • Sabarmati Ashram is level and can be visited at a gentle pace. The gardens are peaceful and there are benches for resting. Spend 2–3 hours rather than rushing.
  • The old city's lanes are uneven and narrow. Choose the Sidi Saiyad Mosque, Jama Masjid and Maniar's Haveli as main sights. Skip the very steep climbs at Bhadra Fort unless you are fit.
  • Hire a car and driver for the whole day. It allows rest between sights, avoids long walks and provides escape from heat and crowds.
  • Museums (Calico, Auto, City) are air-conditioned and largely level, making them ideal afternoon breaks in a sightseeing day.
