Plan 01

1 day in Ahobilam

  1. 01

Day 1: Lower Ahobilam and the main upper shrine

Start early from Nandyal or Allagadda so you reach Lower Ahobilam when the Prahladavarada temple opens. Visit it first, then use a local jeep or your own vehicle for the nearby road-accessible shrines such as Yogananda, Chatravata and Karanja Narasimha. Drive up to Upper Ahobilam after a lunch break, allowing for the afternoon closure, and visit the cave shrine of Ahobila Narasimha, with its gopuram at the entrance. Leave the forest shrines for another trip unless you have a guide and a strong reason to go.

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Plan 02

2 days in Ahobilam

  1. 01

Day 1: Lower Ahobilam and the road-side shrines

Begin at the Prahladavarada temple in the lower village, then visit Yogananda and Chatravata Narasimha. Take a jeep for Bhargava Narasimha, which is reached over a track and a short climb, and stop at Karanja Narasimha on the way up. Finish at the Ahobila Narasimha cave shrine in Upper Ahobilam if time allows.

    Day 2: The forest shrines

Start at first light from Upper Ahobilam with a local guide. Walk to Kroda (Varaha) and Malola Narasimha, then on to Jwala Narasimha, and, if the group is fit, to the Ugra Sthambham viewpoint. Rest through the afternoon. Pavana Narasimha, deeper in the forest, is a separate jeep trip. Skip the forest shrines if it has rained heavily.

Pace: Ugra Sthambham involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Ugra Sthambham: The climb is steep and rocky, with little shade and nothing to hold onto in places. It is not suited to older travellers, anyone with heart or knee conditions, or small children. Doli bearers are reported for the forest route, but check with a guide whether they go this far.

Plan 03

3 days in Ahobilam

  1. 01

    Day 1: Lower Ahobilam

Arrive and settle in. Visit the Prahladavarada temple in the lower village in the evening, when the temple is open again, and walk the village at an easy pace. Rest early.

Day 2: Upper Ahobilam and the forest shrines

Go up at dawn, visit the Ahobila Narasimha cave shrine, then walk to Kroda (Varaha), Malola and Jwala Narasimha with a guide, taking a doli (palanquin) where needed. Return for a long midday rest.

  3. 03

Day 3: Pavana, Bhargava and the lower circle

Take a jeep to Pavana Narasimha in the morning and Bhargava Narasimha after. Finish at Yogananda, Chatravata and Karanja Narasimha on the lower road. Plan the drive out with margin for the early evening.

Pacing

Pacing a Ahobilam trip for parents and children

  • Treat Lower Ahobilam and the Ahobila Narasimha cave shrine as the senior-friendly core. The forest shrines are a separate, more demanding day.
  • Doli (palanquin) bearers are reported for the forest shrines. Agree arrangements locally and do not attempt Jwala Narasimha or Ugra Sthambham without a guide if you have knee, heart or breathing problems.
  • Start early and finish the walking by late morning; the Nallamala heat builds quickly, especially between March and June.
  • Temples close in the afternoon, so plan your darshan around the morning and evening openings, and check current timings locally.
  • Wear shoes you can slip off easily, with good grip for rocky paths, and carry water. Footwear is left outside the shrines.
  • Stay in Nandyal or Allagadda if you need a lift, air conditioning or a wider choice of food, and accept the road time.
