Area by area

Ahobilam neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Lower Ahobilam village

Best for: Pilgrims who want an early darshan and the shortest drive to the lower temples

Good to know: Basic lodgings run for pilgrims are the main option, and choice is small. Book ahead through the Ahobila Matha or the lodging itself, and expect simple rooms, with limited food and early closing. Good for early starts, not for comfort-first travellers.

Sights in this area: Ahobila Matha (Sri Ahobila Math), Prahladavarada Temple (Lower Ahobilam)

  2. 02

    Allagadda

Best for: A more flexible base with shops, buses and more eateries, about 30 km from Ahobilam

Good to know: A town on NH 40 with more services than the temple village. The trade-off is the daily road trip in and out, which suits a one-day visit better than a two-day trek plan.

  3. 03

    Nandyal

Best for: Travellers arriving by train, or families wanting the widest hotel choice

Good to know: The district headquarters and railway junction, roughly 60 km from Ahobilam. A good base for comfort and food variety, but it adds a long daily drive, so start early and leave margin for the return.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
