The short answer

Galaganatha Group of Temples: what visitors should know first

Go if you have time for a second half-day in Aihole or like quiet ruins. It is spread out, uneven and has no facilities, but you will probably have it largely to yourself. Skip it on a very hot afternoon.

History and context

The story behind Galaganatha Group of Temples

The group contains more than thirty medieval Hindu temples and monuments, dated from the 7th to the 12th century. The main shrine belongs to the Early Chalukya period, and a nearly complete 9th-century temple with a Dravida-style tower stands nearby.

The 7th-century Lajja Gauri figure now displayed in the Aihole museum was found here.

Why it matters

Why Galaganatha Group of Temples is worth your time

Galaganatha is where the length of Aihole's story is clearest. Instead of one famous monument, there are over thirty, built across five centuries, and each tells you a little about the taste of its time.

It also carries the story of the Lajja Gauri, an important find now in the museum. For visitors who have the energy, the riverside setting, the open ground and the lack of crowds make it a welcome change from the busy main enclosure.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Travel here by car or auto from the village, about 2.5 km south of the Durga temple. The group sits near the river, with the main shrine and many smaller ones scattered across open ground. Start with the main shrine, which dates from the Early Chalukya period and has a tower in a style sometimes called Kadamba-Nagara.

Look for a nearly complete temple of the 9th century with a southern-style tower, which is rare at Aihole. Among the group, other temples range from the 7th to the 12th century, so walking between them shows the range of change over five hundred years.

Take water and a hat; the area has few facilities. The Lajja Gauri on display in the museum came from here. If you are tired, see the main shrine and the 9th-century temple and then return.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Use a car or auto from the village
  • Carry water; there is little shade
  • Go early or late
  • Wear shoes for uneven ground
